Gurugram Gridlock After Heavy Rainfall
A sudden downpour on Tuesday evening once again paralyzed Gurugram's traffic system, transforming routine commutes into hours-long ordeals. Thousands of residents found themselves trapped on major roads as waterlogging, combined with peak-hour rush and existing diversions, brought movement to a near halt across the bustling city.
Key arteries and intersections were severely impacted, including the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, the Gurgaon-Sohna highway, and the notorious Ambience Mall underpass. Commuters reported being stranded for up to three hours in some of these critical areas.
Traffic police attributed the widespread congestion to significant waterlogging in several parts of Gurugram and on the Delhi side of the expressway near the Dwarka tunnel, which triggered a cascading gridlock. Compounding the issue were ongoing Kanwar Yatra diversions, which had already caused delays even before the evening rains began.
Commuters Describe Harrowing Journeys
The experience for those caught in the chaos was harrowing. Rashi Bhakhri, an employee at a multinational company, recounted leaving her DLF Cyber Park office at 5 PM. While she reached the Ambience Mall underpass in five minutes, the nightmare began there. "It took exactly two hours just to get out of the waterlogged underpass," Bhakhri stated, describing a lack of phone network and rainwater dripping onto vehicles. Her three-hour journey home included an additional 20 minutes to cross a mere 100-meter stretch beyond the underpass.
Another commuter, Smriti Chauhan, reported her office shuttle, which usually covers the distance from Atlas Chowk to DLF Cyber Park in five to seven minutes, took an astonishing one and a half hours. She described the entire stretch as a "sea of red, completely choked as vehicles simply did not move." Shivani, a resident of Sector 56, echoed these sentiments, noting that a typical five-minute drive from Udyog Vihar Phase 3 to Shankar Chowk took her an hour, underscoring the city's persistent drainage and traffic management issues.
Escalating Costs and Emergency Delays
The gridlock had immediate financial repercussions for commuters, with app-based cab fares surging dramatically. Screenshots shared by users showed a ride from Udyog Vihar to Dwarka Sector 1 skyrocketing from approximately ₹350 to nearly ₹1,300. The severe congestion also impeded emergency services; an ambulance was among the vehicles stranded in long queues at IFFCO Chowk by late evening, as traffic personnel struggled to clear the carriageway.
Traffic police identified several major bottlenecks due to waterlogging, including Udyog Vihar, Dhundahera, Kapashera, Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road, and MG Road. Spillover traffic from the Delhi side of the expressway, particularly near the Dwarka tunnel, further exacerbated the situation across these critical stretches.
Persistent Infrastructure Challenges
This latest incident serves as a stark reminder of Gurugram's ongoing struggle with its urban infrastructure. Despite its status as a major business hub, the city's drainage and traffic management systems consistently prove inadequate in handling the monsoon season, leading to repeated disruptions for its vast commuter population.
