Gold's 20-Year Return: Outperforming Commodities with 9.9% Annualized Growth

· · 2 min read

Over two decades ending June 2026, gold delivered a 9.9% annualized spot return, significantly surpassing most major commodities. Its futures performance also remained close to spot, avoiding the roll costs that affect other commodity investments.

According to the World Gold Council's latest report, Gold: The Most Effective Commodity Investment – 2026 Edition, gold has demonstrated remarkable resilience and growth over the past two decades. Between June 2006 and June 2026, gold posted an impressive 9.9% annualised spot return, outshining the majority of major commodity segments during the same period.

Gold's Performance Against Other Commodities

The report highlights that gold's futures return was also strong at 8.9%, a figure notably close to its spot performance. This minimal gap underscores gold’s distinct advantage: a lower exposure to the 'roll costs' that often diminish returns for investors in other commodity futures markets.

  • Gold's 20-Year Annualised Futures Return: 8.9%

In stark contrast, other major commodities faced significant challenges. For instance, crude oil recorded a negative 0.2% spot return and a steep -7.2% futures return over the identical 20-year span. Several broad commodity categories and sub-indices even registered negative returns over the two-decade period, further emphasizing gold's standout performance.

Why Gold Stands Apart

The structural difference between gold and many other commodities is crucial. When markets are in contango, the cost of rolling futures contracts forward can severely impact investor returns. Gold, however, has historically experienced less of this drag.

The World Gold Council attributes gold’s relatively flat futures curve to several factors: its substantial above-ground stock, comparatively low storage costs, and limited convenience yield. These characteristics allow gold’s futures performance to stay closely aligned with its spot performance.

Beyond Returns: Stability and Diversification

While gold may not always be the top performer over shorter investment horizons, its advantage becomes clear over longer timeframes. Another key factor supporting gold's value is its diverse demand base. Unlike commodities heavily reliant on industrial or economic activity, gold benefits from investment, jewellery, and technology-related demand. This broad appeal provides price support during economic uncertainties and contributes to demand during expansions.

The report also notes gold’s lower volatility compared to many major commodity groups. Its varied demand sources contribute to improved portfolio stability and enhanced risk-adjusted returns for investors.

Strategic Portfolio Allocation

For investors, gold serves a unique purpose that differs from a general commodity allocation. The World Gold Council concludes that gold’s distinctive return profile, robust liquidity, significant diversification benefits, and unique market structure position it as a strategic portfolio allocation rather than merely another commodity exposure.
