Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers & Chemicals Ltd (GNFC) announced the appointment of Sanjeev Kumar as its new Director and Managing Director. The decision, approved by the company's board on September 16, 2026, followed a recommendation from the Nomination and Remuneration Committee.

Kumar's tenure as Managing Director officially began on September 9, 2026, the date he assumed charge. His appointment is contingent on approval from the company's members via a postal ballot.

Stock Market Reaction

Following the news, GNFC shares witnessed a significant upward movement. On Thursday, September 17, 2026, the stock was trading at Rs 591.25, marking an increase of Rs 51.10, or 9.46%, from its previous closing price of Rs 540.15. The stock opened at Rs 540.55 and reached an intraday high of Rs 598.90, reflecting positive investor sentiment regarding the leadership change.

Sanjeev Kumar's Background and Tenure

Sanjeev Kumar, a 1998-batch IAS officer from the Gujarat cadre, brings extensive experience to his new role. He currently serves as the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Kumar holds a B.Tech (Hons.) from IIT Kharagpur and an M.P.A. from the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota, USA.

With over 28 years in public administration, Kumar has held various positions across critical departments, including finance, energy and petrochemicals, forest and environment, climate change, and urban development and housing. His appointment as Managing Director is effective until further orders from the Government of Gujarat, with a maximum term of five years from September 9, 2026. As a Director, he is not liable to retire by rotation under Article 136 of the company's Articles of Association.

Leadership Transition

The appointment of Sanjeev Kumar follows the resignation of Rajkumar Beniwal, who ceased to be the company's Managing Director and Director on September 9, 2026.
