The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated a significant enforcement drive, issuing more than 150 notices to prominent food and beverage companies across the nation. The regulatory action targets alleged misleading advertisements, false claims, and non-compliance with crucial labeling regulations.
Major Companies Under Scrutiny
Among the major food business operators (FBOs) facing scrutiny are household names like Nestle India, PepsiCo, and Coca-Cola India. The FSSAI confirmed that action has been taken against a wide array of companies for violating food safety laws in recent months. Other notable companies that have received notices include:
- Abbott India
- Red Bull India
- Danone India
- Monster Energy India
- Hell Energy
- Mondelez India
- Diageo
- Pernod Ricard
- Ferrero India
- Kenvue Inc.
The FSSAI has also seized products from several companies as part of this enforcement drive, though specific product details for every case have not been publicly disclosed. This action underscores the regulator's commitment to ensuring accurate product information and preventing consumer deception.
Online Platforms and Food Services Also Targeted
The crackdown extends beyond manufacturers to include online marketplaces and food service establishments. The FSSAI has issued 12 notices to e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart. Notably, the license for one Amazon warehouse has been cancelled due to alleged violations.
Additionally, more than 30 notices have been served to major food service establishments, including popular chains like KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Domino’s, and Costa Coffee. The regulator has also suspended five licenses held by Domino’s, indicating serious breaches of compliance.
In response to these notices, several companies have reportedly begun taking corrective measures, adjusting their advertisements, product claims, and labeling practices. This latest enforcement drive follows previous actions, including notices issued to five-star hotels last year, highlighting the FSSAI's ongoing efforts to strengthen compliance and protect consumer interests across the entire food industry.
