FSSAI Cracks Down on KFC, Flipkart, Nestle Over Contamination Claims

India's food regulator, FSSAI, has issued notices to major players like KFC, Flipkart, and Nestle following social media complaints of food contamination. Consumers are advised to exercise caution when ordering from quick commerce platforms and inspect deliveries closely.

India's Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) has taken stringent action against prominent food and e-commerce entities, including KFC, Flipkart, and Nestle, in response to public complaints regarding alleged food contamination and unhygienic practices. The regulator's move underscores a heightened focus on ensuring food safety standards across the supply chain, particularly for products delivered via quick commerce platforms.

FSSAI Actions Against Major Brands

The FSSAI issued notices to these companies based on specific allegations:

  • Nestle: A notice was served after reports of insects or larvae allegedly found in a Maggi packet. The FSSAI has requested an Action Taken Report (ATR) detailing vendor information, batch quality control, product withdrawal, and preventative measures.
  • KFC: An outlet in Eluru's MVR Mall received a notice concerning alleged unhygienic conditions. The regulator sought comprehensive details on sanitation, food handling, storage, waste management, pest control, employee hygiene, and corrective actions taken.
  • Flipkart: The e-commerce giant was issued a notice following claims that Open Secret's Unjunked Dates, delivered via Flipkart Minutes, contained insects. FSSAI demanded quality control records, corrective measures, information on affected product removal, and steps to prevent recurrence.

FSSAI Guidelines for Packaged Foods

The FSSAI emphasizes several critical standards for all food business operators (FBOs) to prevent contamination:

  • Hygiene: Foods must be prepared, stored, and packed in hygienic conditions to prevent physical, chemical, and microbiological contamination, including from insects.
  • Packaging: Products require clean, food-grade, and tamper-proof packaging that does not compromise quality or shelf life.
  • Traceability: FBOs must maintain thorough records of suppliers, batch numbers, manufacturing dates, and quality checks to facilitate swift identification and recall of contaminated batches.
  • Standards: Strict hygiene norms must be adhered to, covering food preparation, pest control, temperature management, and employee hygiene.

Consumer Caution for Quick Commerce Orders

Given the nature of quick commerce platforms like Blinkit and Zepto, consumers are advised to be particularly vigilant. These platforms often utilize micro-warehouses or dark stores, which have sometimes faced scrutiny over pest control, waste management, and improper storage.

What to Check Before Ordering:

  • FSSAI License: Look for the 14-digit FSSAI license number of both the platform and the seller on the product page.
  • Expiry Dates: Verify that the app displays the product's expiry or 'use by' date and choose items with ample shelf life remaining.

What to Check Upon Delivery:

  • Temperature: For items like dairy, frozen foods, and eggs, ensure they are properly chilled. Discard immediately if lukewarm or improperly stored.
  • Packaging Integrity: Inspect for bloated packs, broken seals, pinholes, or any signs of tampering. Return any compromised products.
  • Expiry Date Match: Cross-reference the expiry date on the physical package with the one displayed on the app.
  • Product Inspection: For items such as flour, oats, or dates, pour them into a clean container and check for insects, larvae, or unusual web-like formations.
  • Eggs: Do not consume eggs that emit a foul odor and document the issue.

What to Do If You Receive a Contaminated Product

Should you encounter a contaminated product, follow these steps:

  1. Document: Take clear photographs of the product and its packaging.
  2. Refund: Seek a refund directly from the quick commerce platform.
  3. Complain: File a formal complaint through the FSSAI Food Safety Connect app. This ensures the matter is investigated and appropriate action is taken against the responsible seller or storage facility.
