Mumbai, India – Tata Communications, a leading global communications technology firm, has announced a significant investment of nearly $450 million to establish an "AI Super Highway" across India. This ambitious project aims to create a high-speed, low-latency network fabric crucial for the country's burgeoning AI data-center corridors.
The news prompted a positive reaction in the market, with Tata Communications shares gaining 2.09% to Rs 1688.50 during the current session, up from a previous close of Rs 1653.80. The company's market capitalization subsequently rose to Rs 47,894 crore.
Building India's AI-Ready Network
The core of this initiative involves deploying approximately 10,000 kilometers of new long-haul fiber throughout India. This expansion is designed to create one of the nation's most extensive AI-ready connectivity networks, integrating seamlessly with Tata Communications' existing global network backbone.
This advanced infrastructure will offer customers a robust, end-to-end connectivity fabric, engineered to support the demanding performance, resilience, and scale required for next-generation AI workloads. The low-latency network is expected to be a critical enabler for various AI applications and services.
Strategic Vision and Market Opportunity
Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, MD and CEO of Tata Communications, underscored the strategic importance of this investment. "We are excited about the opportunity in the India data centre-to-data centre connectivity, which we believe could evolve into a market exceeding $1 billion over the medium term," he stated.
Lakshminarayanan further elaborated on the company's approach: "With our planned investments, we are building on our existing strengths to create one of the most comprehensive data centre connectivity platforms in the market, positioning us to capture this significant growth opportunity. As we scale, a growing proportion of our expansion is being driven by anchor customer commitments and contracted demand, providing a strong foundation for sustainable growth, efficient capital deployment and long-term value creation."
Fueling India's Digital Transformation
India's data center sector is experiencing rapid growth, driven by increasing adoption of cloud computing, advancements in artificial intelligence, stringent data localization requirements, and rising enterprise demand for robust digital infrastructure. As the country expands its data center capacity, reliable and high-speed connectivity has become as vital as computing power and energy availability in supporting the next wave of digital services.
Tata Communications is engaged in providing international telecommunications services, with segments including Voice Solutions (VS), Data and Managed Services (DMS), and Real Estate (RE). The DMS segment, which encompasses corporate data transmission, virtual private network services, and other managed network solutions, is particularly relevant to this new AI Super Highway project.
