Flipkart to Launch Food Delivery Service, Challenging Zomato & Swiggy

· · 2 min read

E-commerce giant Flipkart is set to enter India's competitive food delivery market, integrating with the government-backed ONDC. CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy confirmed a phased launch, promising wider restaurant selection and improved service to rival Zomato and Swiggy.

E-commerce giant Flipkart, owned by Walmart, is preparing to launch its own food delivery service, setting the stage for a direct challenge to established players like Zomato and Swiggy in India. The move was confirmed by Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy in a recent interview, indicating the new service will roll out in the coming weeks.

Phased Rollout and ONDC Integration

Krishnamurthy stated that Flipkart’s entry into food delivery would follow a cautious, phased approach. Initially, the service will be tested in a limited number of cities to gather customer feedback and refine the offering before a broader expansion. This strategy mirrors the rollout of other Flipkart initiatives, such as Flipkart Minutes.

A key aspect of Flipkart's strategy involves integrating with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), a government-backed initiative aimed at democratizing e-commerce. This integration is expected to help Flipkart offer a distinct value proposition rather than merely replicating existing services.

Enhanced Customer Experience Promised

According to Krishnamurthy, Flipkart aims to differentiate itself by providing a wider selection of restaurants, superior service, and more reliable deliveries. The company believes it can bring something new to the market and significantly enhance the overall customer experience in food ordering.

The new food delivery offering will be accessible through a combination of a dedicated standalone application and integration within the main Flipkart app, providing users with flexible access points.

Competitive Landscape Heats Up

Flipkart's announcement comes at a time when the Indian food delivery sector is seeing increasing innovation and competition. Existing players are constantly experimenting with new services and operational models. Rapido recently introduced 'Ownly,' focusing on lower prices for consumers and better economics for restaurants. Swiggy launched 'Toing' for budget-conscious users, while Zomato continues to dominate with offerings like 'Bistro.'

Flipkart's long-term objective is to build a substantial, nationwide food delivery business, leveraging its extensive e-commerce infrastructure and customer base to carve out a significant share in this dynamic market.
