Film Producer K. Venkata Narayana Appointed Delhi Special Representative for Tamil Nadu

· · 2 min read

Businessman K. Venkata Narayana, also a film producer for Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has been appointed Tamil Nadu's Special Representative in New Delhi. The cabinet-rank role, traditionally held by senior politicians, has sparked controversy due to Narayana's business background and close ties to Vijay.

Chennai, India – Actor-turned-Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has selected businessman K. Venkata Narayana to serve as the Special Representative of the Tamil Nadu government in New Delhi. Narayana, who is also producing Vijay's upcoming film, Jana Nayagan, officially assumed the cabinet-rank position on Friday, June 30, 2026.

The appointment has ignited a political controversy, as the crucial role, which acts as the state's primary liaison with the Union government, has historically been filled by seasoned politicians rather than individuals from the business or entertainment sectors.

A Key Role in the Capital

The Special Representative position is vital for Tamil Nadu, serving as a political bridge to the central government. Responsibilities include coordinating meetings with Union ministers, following up on critical infrastructure projects, managing policy matters, and ensuring smooth parliamentary coordination. Critics argue that appointing a film producer and businessman to such a post could diminish its traditional stature and effectiveness.

Who is K. Venkata Narayana?

Before venturing into the film industry, K. Venkata Narayana established a notable career in the corporate world. He previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of Prestige Group, a prominent real estate developer. Following his tenure there, Narayana founded the Bengaluru-based KVN Group, a diversified conglomerate with significant interests in real estate and entertainment. His entertainment arm, KVN Productions, established in 2020, is currently producing Chief Minister Vijay's much-anticipated final film.

Although of Telugu origin, Narayana has spent the majority of his professional life in Karnataka, where he built the KVN Group into one of Bengaluru's well-known business entities.

Political Backlash and Defense

The decision to appoint Narayana has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties across Tamil Nadu. DMK Rajya Sabha MP P. Wilson expressed concerns that the appointment of a film producer would “belittle” the post’s importance. BJP state president Nainar Nagendran questioned how an individual with strong ties to Karnataka could effectively represent Tamil Nadu's distinct interests in the national capital. Both the AIADMK and AMMK have also voiced their disapproval.

Conversely, leaders within the ruling TVK party have defended Chief Minister Vijay's choice. A senior party official reportedly described the appointment as an act of “gratitude,” highlighting Narayana’s steadfast support for Vijay during challenging times surrounding the production of Jana Nayagan, noting that Narayana never sought public recognition for his loyalty.
