In a significant boost to India's defense and aerospace ambitions, Reliance Industries Limited (Reliance) and global engineering giant Rolls-Royce have declared their intent to collaborate on developing a sovereign indigenous combat engine. The partnership, announced on August 14, 2026, will focus on designing, developing, manufacturing, and delivering a propulsion system specifically for India's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program.
This strategic alliance underscores India's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) vision, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign technology for critical defense infrastructure. A key component of this partnership will be the exploration and establishment of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex within India, envisioned as a center of excellence for advanced power and propulsion technology.
A Leap Towards Indigenous Power
The collaboration brings together Rolls-Royce's extensive heritage in advanced engine technology with Reliance's industrial scale, technological capabilities, and project execution strengths. This combination is poised to create a robust framework for joint development and manufacturing.

The proposed Aero Gas Turbine Complex is designed to foster complete, end-to-end Indian capability, encompassing every stage from design and development to manufacturing, testing, production, and through-life support. This initiative extends beyond the immediate goals of the AMCA program, opening avenues for broader cooperation across defense, civil aerospace, and future power and propulsion systems.

India's AMCA Program: A Fifth-Generation Vision
The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is India’s flagship initiative to develop an indigenous single-seat, twin-engine, 5th-generation stealth multirole fighter jet. Designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) under the DRDO, the AMCA is intended to form the core of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Navy fleets in the coming decades, eventually replacing aging platforms like the Sukhoi Su-30MKI.
The AMCA airframe incorporates advanced stealth characteristics, including a low radar cross-section (RCS), internal weapons bays, serpentine "S-shaped" air intakes to conceal engine fan blades, canted twin V-tails, and extensive use of radar-absorbent materials and carbon composites. It is engineered for a wide range of capabilities, including air supremacy, ground strike, suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), electronic warfare, and supercruise—sustained supersonic flight without afterburners.
The development roadmap for the AMCA includes a prototype rollout planned between 2028 and 2029, with first flights targeting the same period. Full certification is anticipated by 2032, leading to serial induction into service around 2034-2035.
Two-Phase Engine Development Strategy
Engine development has historically been a critical and challenging area in Indian military aviation. To mitigate risks and ensure program continuity, India has structured the AMCA engine strategy into two distinct phases:
Phase 1: AMCA Mk-1 (Interim Powerplant)
- Engine: US-supplied GE Aerospace F414-INS6 turbofans, delivering approximately 98 kN (kilonewton) of thrust.
- Scope: These engines are selected to power the initial prototype development phase and the first 2-4 production squadrons (approximately 60-70 aircraft).
- Current Context: Global supply chain disruptions and ongoing cost negotiations are closely monitored by DRDO and ADA to ensure timely execution during prototype fabrication.
Phase 2: AMCA Mk-2 (Sovereign High-Thrust Engine)
- Target Requirement: A brand-new 110-130 kN class high-thrust engine, specifically designed to provide true supercruise capability and maximize stealth performance for the AMCA.
- Development Model: This phase will be executed under a co-development arrangement between foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Indian industrial partners. A critical aspect of this phase is the complete Transfer of Technology (ToT) and domestic Intellectual Property (IP) retention, ensuring India gains full control over the advanced propulsion technology.
The partnership between Reliance and Rolls-Royce is a pivotal step towards realizing the goals of Phase 2, aiming to deliver a truly indigenous and cutting-edge engine for India's next-generation fighter jet program.
