A former IT manager at Deloitte in Hong Kong has been accused of stealing hundreds of company laptops and selling them to finance personal stock market investments. Prosecutors allege the individual, who worked in Deloitte's information technology department, unlawfully removed 423 laptops belonging to the professional services firm.
Allegations of Theft and Trading Losses
According to court proceedings, bank records indicate the former manager received more than HK$458,000 (approximately ₹55 lakh) from the sale of the stolen devices. Investigators claim this money was subsequently funneled into stock trading activities, which ultimately resulted in significant financial losses for the accused.
The case has garnered attention in Hong Kong, highlighting concerns over the misuse of company assets for personal financial speculation.
Court Appearance and Sentencing
The former employee appeared before a Hong Kong court, where he was remanded in custody pending sentencing. While he was not required to enter a plea during the hearing, his defense counsel stated that he was deeply ashamed of his actions. The court was also informed that the defendant had attempted suicide the day before surrendering to authorities.
The defense further cited considerable personal and family-related stress as contributing factors. His wife had reportedly been suffering from postnatal depression, and his father was undergoing treatment following lung cancer surgery.
Deputy Judge Minnie Wat Lai-man is scheduled to deliver the sentence on August 21. Under Hong Kong law, theft carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment, though cases heard in the District Court, like this one, have a maximum sentence of seven years.
