The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has unveiled a secure digital platform designed to help members trace and manage their inactive provident fund (PF) accounts. This new Aadhaar-based portal allows individuals to locate dormant accounts, transfer balances to their active Universal Account Number (UAN), or apply for settlement online, as confirmed by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on July 27, 2026.
Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Shobha Karandlaje, informed the Lok Sabha that this initiative addresses a common issue faced by salaried employees who accumulate multiple PF accounts over their careers and often lose track of older ones. These accounts frequently become inoperative, with their accumulated balances remaining untransferred to current active UANs.
Solving the Inactive Account Challenge
The development of this digital platform by the EPFO is a direct response to the need for a simplified process for consolidating PF savings. Many subscribers, particularly those with several UANs, have struggled with the manual procedures previously required to manage these accounts.
Responding to a query raised by Member of Parliament VK Sreekandan, Minister Karandlaje elaborated on the portal's functionality. Eligible subscribers can authenticate their identity using Aadhaar to access their old provident fund accounts. Once verified, they have the option to either transfer the accumulated balance to their active UAN or submit a claim for settlement, depending on their eligibility criteria.
How the New Portal Functions
The core of the new system is its Aadhaar-enabled authentication, which ensures secure digital verification of a member's identity. Upon successful authentication, users can identify their dormant PF accounts and initiate an online transfer of funds to their currently active EPF account, which must be linked to a valid UAN.
For eligible accounts, the platform also provides an option for direct settlement, significantly reducing the need for physical paperwork and multiple visits to EPFO offices. This streamlined process aims to make EPF account management more efficient and transparent.
- Aadhaar-based authentication: Secure digital identity verification.
- Online transfer facility: Enables transfer of old PF balance to an active UAN.
- Settlement option: Allows eligible members to claim inactive PF balances.
- Digital KYC declarations: Supports online submission of joint declarations for KYC updates.
- Reduced paperwork: Minimises manual intervention and physical documentation.
- Faster processing: Improves transparency and speeds up settlement.
Limitations of the Portal
While the portal offers significant advantages, it currently has a notable limitation. When asked if the platform's scope would be expanded to assist members who cannot recall or retrieve details of their old EPF account numbers or identification records, the government stated there is no such proposal at present. This means the portal is designed for members who can authenticate themselves and identify their previous EPF accounts through existing records.
The Labour Ministry anticipates that this initiative will greatly simplify the process of consolidating retirement savings, helping employees reunite their scattered funds without the previous cumbersome offline procedures.
