India's Engineering Job Market Undergoing Significant Transformation
The landscape of engineering employment in India is experiencing a profound shift, with a growing majority of opportunities emerging outside the conventional IT, Software & Services sectors. According to a recent analysis by Foundit for Engineers' Day 2026, a substantial 67% of all engineering jobs are now found in diverse industries, moving beyond the traditional tech domain.
Fresh Graduates Face Uphill Battle for Entry-Level Roles
This evolving market presents a considerable challenge for fresh engineering graduates. Data indicates a significant experience mismatch: nearly 45% of active engineering candidates are at the entry level (0-3 years experience), yet only 28% of available positions are tailored for this demographic. This imbalance leads to intense competition, with approximately 9.5 candidates vying for every entry-level engineering job. In contrast, the ratio drops to four to five candidates per job for professionals with more than three years of experience, highlighting a clear preference for seasoned talent.
Demand Expands Across Diverse Industries
The shift away from an IT-centric market is broadening the career horizons for engineers but also redefining the skills most in demand. Beyond IT, Software & Services, and Global Capability Centers (GCCs) – which together account for 33% of roles – the remaining 67% are distributed across various sectors:
- Manufacturing and industrial roles make up 15% of opportunities.
- Construction, engineering, and real estate contribute 13%.
- Electronics and semiconductors, automotive and Electric Vehicles (EV), and energy, power, and renewables collectively account for another 26%.
Tarun Sharma, CPTO at Foundit, emphasized this trend, stating, "Engineering careers today are no longer defined by a single sector or traditional career path. As demand expands across technology, manufacturing, infrastructure, automotive, electronics and energy, engineers have a wider canvas to build their careers." He underscored the importance for engineers to continuously adapt their foundational knowledge to emerging areas of demand.
Specialization Plays a Crucial Role in Employability
The competitiveness of the job market also varies significantly by engineering specialization. Fields such as Automobile/Automotive Engineering and Production/Industrial Engineering show relatively low competition, with approximately 1.2 and 1.4 candidates per job, respectively. Chemical Engineering also fares well at 2.9 candidates per opening.
Conversely, specializations like Electronics & Instrumentation and Electronics & Communication/Telecom face much higher competition, with 11.5 and 10.9 candidates per opportunity. Even Computer Science/IT, despite its large talent pool, remains competitive at 5.8 candidates per job, close to the overall market average.
Geographic Hubs and Evolving Regional Demands
While Bengaluru remains the primary engineering hiring hub, accounting for 19% of opportunities, demand is increasingly spreading across other major cities and even Tier-II centers. Delhi-NCR (13%), Hyderabad (12%), Pune (10%), Chennai (9%), and Mumbai (8%) are significant contributors.
Each region exhibits distinct hiring patterns: Bengaluru's demand spans CSE/IT, AI, electronics, semiconductors, and R&D, while Pune and Chennai show stronger requirements in automotive and manufacturing. Mumbai's opportunities are diverse, covering infrastructure, energy, engineering, and IT. This diverse geographic demand further accentuates the need for engineers to align their skills and experience with specific industry needs.
