International travelers arriving in Egypt will soon experience a more efficient entry process, as Cairo International Airport prepares to launch a new digital visa-on-arrival system from August 1. This innovative system will replace the conventional visa sticker with a unique QR code, designed to significantly reduce processing times at immigration counters.
How the New Digital Visa System Works
During the initial pilot phase, visitors arriving at Cairo Airport will receive a QR code upon arrival. This code will be scanned alongside their passport during entry checks, facilitating a smoother and faster immigration experience.
Future Expansion and Application Channels
Authorities plan to expand the digital visa system, allowing travelers to obtain their QR code through multiple channels prior to departure:
- An official online portal, which will accept applications 48 hours before travel.
- A dedicated mobile application.
- Self-service kiosks located within Cairo Airport's arrival halls.
The QR code can be generated by travelers themselves or with assistance from travel agencies. It will remain valid for 48 hours after issuance and can be presented digitally on a smartphone or as a printed copy.
Cost and Pilot Phase Details
The digital visa-on-arrival will be priced at $36. This cost includes the standard $30 visa fee and an additional $6 digital processing charge. During this initial trial period, Egypt will continue to offer the existing paper-based visa-on-arrival option alongside the new QR-based system, ensuring a smooth transition.
Should the trial prove successful, Egyptian authorities intend to gradually phase out the traditional visa sticker system and extend digital visa facilities to other international airports across the country, enhancing travel convenience for visitors nationwide.
