E20/E30 Fuel Worries Deter 43% of New Car Buyers, Survey Finds

· · 3 min read

A recent LocalCircles survey reveals that 43% of prospective car buyers in India may delay or avoid purchasing a new vehicle due to concerns over E20 and future E30 ethanol-blended fuels. Apprehensions about compatibility, efficiency, and higher maintenance costs are influencing consumer decisions.

Uncertainty surrounding the nationwide rollout of E20 petrol and the impending transition to E30 fuel blends is significantly impacting India's automobile market. A new survey by community platform LocalCircles indicates that 43% of prospective vehicle buyers might defer or avoid purchasing a new car over the next 12 months due to these fuel policy concerns.

Consumer Apprehensions Mount Over Ethanol Blends

The survey, which gathered responses from over 28,000 potential buyers across 311 districts, highlights growing consumer apprehension. Key factors driving this reluctance include worries about:

  • Reduced fuel efficiency
  • Vehicle compatibility with higher ethanol blends
  • Increased maintenance costs

This sentiment shift suggests that fuel policy uncertainty has evolved from primarily being a vehicle ownership concern to directly influencing purchasing decisions for new vehicles.

Impact on Existing Vehicle Owners

The hesitation among prospective buyers is rooted in the experiences of current vehicle owners. A separate LocalCircles survey of over 50,000 respondents revealed that:

  • Five out of ten petrol vehicle owners reported a decline of more than 10% in fuel efficiency since early 2025.
  • Three out of ten respondents experienced higher wear and tear or increased repair needs for components like engines, fuel pumps, and injectors.

Owners of older vehicles (purchased before 2023) reported additional expenses ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 due to decreased mileage and higher maintenance. Many expressed a preference for lower-ethanol fuel options like E0 or E10.

Government Mandates and Future Outlook

The nationwide rollout of E20 petrol began in April 2025, with the government also notifying standards for even higher ethanol blends, including E22, E25, E27, and E30. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has mandated a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95 for E20 petrol sold from April 1, 2026. Meanwhile, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is studying the impact of E25 fuel on engine life and fuel efficiency.

Shifting Buyer Preferences: EVs and Hybrids Gain Traction

Amidst the uncertainty, interest in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles is notably increasing. The survey found that 14% of respondents are considering purchasing an EV or hybrid vehicle, more than double the 6% who plan to buy a new petrol vehicle in the next 12 months. This trend mirrors broader industry shifts, with EVs accounting for over 11% of total vehicle retail sales in May 2026.

Recommendations for Clarity

LocalCircles recommends several measures to provide consumers with greater clarity:

  • Publishing transparent, long-term testing data on the impact of higher ethanol blends.
  • Clearly communicating the timeline for E30 implementation.
  • Mandating the display of blend information at fuel stations.
  • Requiring automakers to certify the E30 compatibility of new vehicles.

Without greater certainty on the future fuel roadmap, this uncertainty could suppress demand in India's otherwise robust automobile market.
