Diet Coke Shortage Fuels Exclusive 'Coke-tail' Parties in Indian Pubs

· · 2 min read

Amid a scarcity of Diet Coke in India, pubs and social media influencers are organizing exclusive 'Coke-tail' parties. These events charge entry fees of ₹1,000 to ₹1,500, offering guests access to the coveted beverage alongside entertainment.

A recent shortage of Diet Coke across India has created an unexpected entrepreneurial opportunity for the nation's pubs and social media influencers. With aluminium can supply issues, partly exacerbated by the Iran war and new Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification requirements, the popular zero-sugar beverage has become a rare commodity.

From Scarcity to Social Event

Capitalizing on this scarcity, venues are now hosting 'Diet Coke parties,' dubbed 'Coke-tails,' where attendees pay a premium for access. Entry fees typically range from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 ($10-16), according to a Reuters report. These events go beyond just offering the drink; they provide a full experience, including music, alcoholic beverages, and themed activities like T-shirt painting.

At one such event in Mumbai, the entry ticket also served as a raffle entry, with two lucky winners each taking home an impressive 50 cans of Diet Coke. A marketing executive, credited with initiating these parties in India, told the news agency that her company plans to host more, noting that Coca-Cola itself has expressed interest in expanding such events.

The Appeal of the 'Coke-tail'

Diet Coke holds a significant place in India's beverage culture, particularly as a mixer for popular drinks like rum-and-coke, and as a preferred option for health-conscious consumers. Its sudden disappearance from shelves has led to widespread social media discussion and memes, highlighting the public's demand.

Sankalp Kathuria, CEO of Broadway, a retail chain, confirmed their participation in this trend, stating they are transforming their spaces into a "full-blown Diet Coke experience." A ₹999 ticket at Broadway grants consumers not only Diet Coke but also burgers, vintage art displays, and custom T-shirt painting. This innovative approach demonstrates how businesses are adapting to supply chain challenges by creating unique, high-value experiences around a scarce product.
