The proposed Delhi-Varanasi-Patna-Siliguri bullet train corridor has advanced significantly, with the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) submitting its detailed project report (DPR) for the ambitious 865-km route to the Railway Ministry. This high-speed rail link promises a dramatic reduction in travel times, potentially transforming connectivity across northern, eastern, and northeastern India.
Dramatic Reduction in Travel Time
Currently, the journey from Delhi to Siliguri can take between 20 to 24 hours by rail. The new high-speed corridor is projected to slash this travel time to approximately 6 hours and 45 minutes. Specific route segments also see substantial cuts:
- Delhi to Varanasi: The 756 km stretch, currently 11-12 hours, could be covered in about 3 hours 50 minutes.
- Varanasi to Siliguri: This 744 km section may take around 2 hours 55 minutes.
- Patna to Siliguri: The journey could be completed in roughly 2 hours.
- Delhi to Patna: A trip that typically lasts 12-14 hours is expected to shorten to approximately 4 hours 41 minutes.
NHSRCL Gears Up for Implementation
Following the DPR submission, NHSRCL has initiated administrative actions, inviting applications for key positions from senior technocrats and Indian Railways officers. These appointments, expected to be finalized within 30 days, include Officer on Special Duty and Additional General Manager roles. The appointed officers will be stationed in critical cities such as Delhi, Noida, Agra, Lucknow, Varanasi, and Patna. Their responsibilities will encompass coordinating surveys, land acquisition, administrative processes, and construction work to ensure the project adheres to its timeline.
Transforming Regional Connectivity and Economy
The Delhi-Varanasi-Patna-Siliguri corridor is particularly significant for Bihar, where it is expected to pass through major cities including Buxar, Ara, and Patna. Patna is anticipated to be a key stoppage point. Railway Board officials highlight the project's potential to become a major milestone for eastern India's connectivity, easing access to the North-East and stimulating economic and industrial activity in Bihar.
High-Speed Rail Technology in Focus
India is actively developing indigenous B28 bullet train coaches, designed to achieve speeds of 280 km/h. Concurrently, Japan's Shinkansen bullet train coaches, anticipated by 2029-30, are expected to reach top speeds of 350 km/h. Beyond these, advancements include Japan and China's development of maglev trains capable of speeds up to 600 km/h, and Russia's offer to supply Ivolga freight trains, which can reach 360 km/h, showcasing the cutting edge of rail technology.
