NEW DELHI – The Delhi Police have initiated a culpable homicide investigation following a tragic fire at a bed-and-breakfast in the city’s Malviya Nagar area, which resulted in the deaths of 21 individuals and the rescue of 40 others. The blaze, which erupted at the Flourish Stay B&B in Hauz Rani, also affected the adjacent Lemon Green Restaurant.
Tragedy Unfolds in South Delhi
The horrifying incident saw people desperately jumping from windows to escape the flames, with local residents quickly mobilizing to assist in rescue efforts by laying out mattresses and breaking windows. Many of the deceased have been identified as foreign nationals from Central Asian and African countries. Those rescued were immediately rushed to the nearby Max Hospital, where at least 26 individuals are reported to be in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll may yet increase.
Investigation into Safety Lapses
Authorities are scrutinizing the Flourish Stay B&B, which reportedly had only one entry and exit point, a significant safety concern for a multi-story building. The structure comprised a basement, a ground floor, and five upper floors, with the ground floor housing the restaurant and the upper levels operating as a hotel. A critical aspect of the ongoing investigation is the hotel's fire No-Objection Certificate (NOC) and its operational licensing.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched a separate inquiry into the incident. Satya Sharma, chairperson of the MCD's standing committee, confirmed that orders have been issued to investigate the building's age, ownership, and adherence to regulations. Initial reports suggest the Flourish Stay hotel was licensed for only six rooms but was operating with 25, a significant violation that will lead to action against all responsible parties.
National Response and Support
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over the loss of lives and announced ex-gratia payments. Next of kin of each deceased will receive Rs 2 lakh, and Rs 50,000 will be provided to each injured person from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.
