Commercial LPG, CNG Prices Rise; Household Rates Stable
Commercial cooking gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) prices have seen recent increases across major Indian cities as of June 5, 2026. This comes amidst rising global energy costs and supply pressures. However, household cooking gas (14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinders) rates have remained unchanged since early March, offering some relief to consumers.
Recent Price Revisions
The price of commercial 19 kg LPG cylinders was revised on June 1, with a notable increase of ₹42 in Delhi, bringing the cost to ₹3,113.50. Kolkata saw an even sharper rise of ₹53.5, with its commercial cylinder now priced at ₹3,255.50. For smaller 5 kg Free Trade LPG cylinders in Delhi, the price climbed by ₹11 to ₹821.5.
CNG prices have also been on an upward trend. A ₹2 per kg hike on May 26 marked the fourth increase since May 15, accumulating a total rise of ₹6 per kg. In Delhi, CNG is now retailed at ₹83.09 per kg.
Global Factors and Supply Challenges
These price adjustments are largely attributed to a surge in international energy prices. The conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, which escalated in late February and led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, significantly impacted global crude oil and LPG markets. India, heavily reliant on Middle Eastern supplies, imports over 40 percent of its crude oil and approximately 90 percent of its LPG through this critical maritime route.
Household LPG Shielded Despite Rising Import Costs
Despite the volatility in global markets, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder has been maintained at ₹913 in Delhi since an earlier revision in March. Government sources indicate that this stability reflects deliberate efforts to protect household consumers from the full impact of international price fluctuations. The cost of supplying domestic cylinders has increased by about 40 percent in recent months due to higher international benchmark prices, particularly a 38 percent jump in the Saudi Contract Price for propane in April.
Officials emphasize that India's household LPG rates remain among the lowest in the region, even with the rising global costs, comparing favorably to neighboring countries.
