Cockroach Janta Party: Satirical Movement Gains 9M+ Instagram Followers, Eclipsing BJP in Days

· · 2 min read

The satirical 'Cockroach Janta Party,' launched on X on May 16, quickly amassed over 9 million Instagram followers by May 20, surpassing the BJP's official handle. Founded by Abhijeet Dipke, the movement began as a joke but now channels youth frustration.

A satirical movement dubbed the "Cockroach Janta Party" (CJP) has achieved viral status on Instagram, amassing over 9 million followers in just four days and dramatically surpassing the official handle of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Unexpected Rise of CJP

Launched on X (formerly Twitter) on May 16, the CJP quickly established an Instagram presence on May 17. By May 20, its follower count had soared past 9 million. In stark contrast, the BJP's official Instagram page, @bjp4india, holds approximately 8.7 million followers despite having posted over 18,000 times compared to CJP's mere 54 posts.

"Don't underestimate the power of youth," a statement from the CJP's social media read after crossing the BJP's follower count. "'World's largest party' they said."

How the Movement Began

The genesis of the CJP traces back to a controversial remark allegedly made by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant during a court hearing. The use of the word "cockroach" in a context that sparked widespread online backlash among young people quickly became a catalyst.

Abhijeet Dipke, a 30-year-old from Aurangabad, Maharashtra, seized the moment. Having recently completed a Master's in Public Relations, Dipke posted an invitation on May 16 to join a new platform for "cockroaches," listing eligibility criteria such as "unemployed, lazy, chronically online, ability to rant professionally." This post rapidly went viral, even before Justice Kant clarified his remarks were aimed at individuals using fake degrees, not unemployed youth.

Beyond the Satire: A Voice for Youth Frustration

Described in its bio as "A political front of the youth, by the youth, for the youth," the Cockroach Janta Party has evolved beyond mere satire. It has become a significant platform for channeling genuine frustrations among India's younger population, addressing pressing issues like youth unemployment, exam paper leaks, and political accountability.

Dipke, who serves as the "Founding President," previously volunteered with the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) social media team. The CJP has already recorded over 160,000 registrations on its website. On X, where the movement originated, its handle boasts over 165,000 followers. The movement has also garnered political attention, with figures like Akhilesh Yadav and Mahua Moitra publicly expressing their support on social media.
