Cochin Shipyard Shares Dive 9% on Revised FY27 Margin Guidance

· · 2 min read

Cochin Shipyard Ltd. saw its shares drop over 9% on Friday after the company issued a moderated EBITDA margin guidance of 14% for FY27, lower than previous expectations. This revised outlook impacted investor sentiment significantly.

Shares of Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL) experienced a sharp decline of over 9% in Friday's trading session, reacting to the company's updated financial guidance for the fiscal year 2027. The downturn was primarily triggered by a revised Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA) margin forecast of approximately 14% for FY27, delivered during a recent investor call.

FY27 Outlook Moderates Investor Expectations

During its analyst call on Thursday, Cochin Shipyard indicated that while it anticipates revenue growth of around 12% in FY27, potentially accelerating to 15%, its profit margins are expected to moderate. The projected 14% EBITDA margin for FY27 represents a notable decrease compared to the 17% achieved in the June quarter and 16% recorded in FY26. This blended margin guidance came in about 300 basis points lower than earlier estimates by brokerage firms like Kotak, leading to a bearish sentiment among investors.

Factors Behind Margin Normalization

Cochin Shipyard explained that the historically elevated margins were partly attributable to high-margin nominated orders and income generated from its substantial surplus cash holdings. As these specific factors normalize, the company expects its overall margins to settle at more sustainable levels going forward.

The company also provided a breakdown of its segment-wise margin expectations:

  • Shipbuilding Business: Margins are projected to be in the range of 10-12%.
  • Ship Repair Segment: Margins are expected to remain higher, estimated at 22-24%.

Looking ahead, Cochin Shipyard anticipates its revenue mix to continue leaning towards shipbuilding, with approximately 70% of total revenue derived from shipbuilding activities and the remaining 30% from ship repair services.

Market Reaction and Stock Performance

The market responded swiftly to the updated guidance, with Cochin Shipyard stock slipping 9.45% to Rs 1380.65 during the current session. This fall reduced the firm's market capitalization to Rs 38,725 crore. The stock's one-year beta of 1.36 signals very high volatility. Furthermore, Cochin Shipyard shares are currently trading below their 5-day, 10-day, 20-day, 30-day, 50-day, 100-day, 150-day, and 200-day moving averages, indicating a prevailing bearish trend for the defense sector stock.
