Chennai Metro Hikes Fines to ₹2,500 for Noisy Passengers

· · 2 min read

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has significantly increased penalties for passengers causing noise disturbances, such as playing music or videos without headphones. Violators now face fines up to ₹2,500 and possible removal from metro premises.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has dramatically increased the penalty for passengers causing noise disturbances on its trains and station premises. Commuters caught playing music or videos without headphones, using mobile phones on speaker mode, or engaging in loud conversations now face a fine of up to ₹2,500, a significant jump from the previous ₹500.

The stricter enforcement, which also includes the possibility of offenders being removed from metro property by authorized officials, comes after amendments notified by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) on June 19, 2026. These revisions were introduced through the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026, specifically targeting Section 59 of the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002, which addresses nuisance or discomfort to fellow passengers.

Improving Commuter Experience

CMRL stated that the initiative aims to enhance the overall commuting experience by minimizing noise pollution and ensuring a more comfortable and respectful environment for all passengers. The metro authority has urged all commuters to utilize headphones for personal audio and video entertainment and to keep conversations at a considerate volume.

Recent Awareness Campaigns

Prior to the penalty hike, CMRL had already conducted a passenger awareness campaign last month. This campaign promoted disciplined travel practices, including allowing passengers to alight before boarding, keeping train doors unobstructed, adhering to safety lines on platforms, and following escalator etiquette ("Stand Left, Walk Right"), alongside the crucial advice to use headphones for audio and video content.

The move underscores CMRL's commitment to maintaining a serene and pleasant travel environment, reinforcing the importance of passenger etiquette for the comfort of everyone utilizing the Chennai Metro system.
