IMD Issues Orange Alert for Heavy Rain, Storms Across 18 Indian States

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall and storms across 18 states, including Odisha and Bihar. This alert comes amidst a monsoon paradox, with localized severe weather despite overall national rainfall deficits.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall, lightning, and volatile weather across at least 18 states. This alert signals a period of intense downpours and severe thunderstorms, prompting officials to urge high vigilance across affected regions.

Regions Under Alert

Odisha and Bihar are under a specific orange warning, indicating a high likelihood of significant weather disruption. Beyond these two states, heavy rain warnings are active across Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Uttarakhand.

Coastal and island territories, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and North Interior Karnataka, are also bracing for intense rainfall. Thunderstorm activity with sharp gusts is predicted for Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, South Interior Karnataka, West Bengal, and Sikkim.

The northeastern belt faces persistent rain threats, encompassing Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Additionally, Vidarbha and Gangetic West Bengal are under similar alerts, while coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Lakshadweep continue to experience heavy monsoon activity.

Monsoon Paradox Explained

This barrage of severe weather unfolds amid a complex monsoonal paradox. Despite the current localized flash floods and landslide threats, national rainfall levels remain subdued overall. The IMD's initial long-range forecast in April had projected June-September rainfall at approximately 92% of the long-term average, largely due to the anticipated onset of El Niño.

This below-normal prediction has largely materialized, albeit with sharp fluctuations. Cumulative rainfall sat nearly 40% below normal by mid-June, before periodic active spells narrowed the gap. By early August, national figures still remained around 12% below average. However, as the current active pulse demonstrates, even a deficient monsoon season retains the power to unleash severe local disruption.
