Bihar Teacher's Thekua Business Reaches ₹15 Crore, Empowers 50 Women

· · 2 min read

Former Bihar teacher Veena Devi launched Momsmade, a food business centered on traditional snacks like thekua, after moving to Bengaluru. Her venture, supported by her son, has grown into a ₹15 crore brand, fulfilling over 1,000 daily orders and employing 50 women.

What started as a way to stay busy has blossomed into a remarkable ₹15 crore enterprise for Veena Devi, a former teacher from Bihar. After dedicating 15 years to educating children, she relocated to Bengaluru with her son, Sameer. The transition to a new city, coupled with newfound free time, prompted Veena Devi to seek a productive outlet.

Inspired by other women in her housing society successfully selling homemade food, Veena Devi decided to embark on her own culinary venture. This modest beginning gradually evolved into Momsmade, a thriving homegrown food business specializing in traditional Bihari snacks.

From Home Kitchen to Daily Orders

Veena Devi initially prepared classic Bihari delicacies such as namkeen thekua, meetha thekua, and dalbhoote from her own kitchen. Following her son's suggestion, she also introduced gur thekua, a snack traditionally made during Chhath Puja. These authentic flavors quickly gained popularity within her community, leading to a surge in demand. Starting with 10 to 50 orders daily, Momsmade now fulfills over 1,000 orders each day and collaborates with approximately 50 women for product preparation and packaging.

Today, Momsmade's product range extends beyond thekua to include other traditional items like nimki and chana dal.

Investment Fuels Rapid Growth

The success story of Momsmade caught the attention of technology investor Aditya Singh, who shared the company's journey on social media. Singh revealed that his firm invested approximately ₹1.5 crore in the startup, noting that the business expanded 15-fold in less than a year. He highlighted how thekua, a beloved Bihari snack for generations, is now reaching homes across India through Momsmade's handmade batches.

Upholding Quality and Tradition

As demand for Momsmade's products soared, Veena Devi faced the significant challenge of maintaining consistent taste and quality. In the early stages, she relied on her experience to balance ingredients like flour, jaggery, and ghee for small batches. With production scaling into thousands, she formalized her process, ensuring every thekua retains its signature taste, crunch, and golden hue.

The foundation of Momsmade's recipes lies in the traditional culinary lessons Veena Devi inherited from her mother. These time-honored home methods and authentic flavors are meticulously preserved. Every batch undergoes careful inspection before reaching customers, guaranteeing the distinct taste and crunch of thekua remain intact. What began as a small home kitchen endeavor has transformed into a recognized brand celebrating traditional Bihari snacks.
