Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) are making headlines after formalizing a significant agreement for the long-term maintenance of Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets. This crucial pact marks an important milestone in the consortium formed by the two industrial giants.
The agreement, signed on September 15, 2026, paves the way for the establishment of a joint venture company. Both TRSL and BHEL will hold an equal 50% stake in this new entity. The primary objective of the joint venture is to undertake comprehensive maintenance services for 80 Vande Bharat sleeper train sets over an extensive period of 35 years.
Indian Railways Project Valued at Rs 24,000 Crore
This maintenance mandate forms a vital component of a broader Indian Railways project, valued at an estimated Rs 24,000 crore. The larger contract was previously awarded to the TRSL-BHEL consortium for the manufacturing and supply of these advanced trainsets. Additionally, the consortium is responsible for the upgradation of government manufacturing units and trainset depots, ensuring a holistic approach to modernizing India's rail infrastructure.
Strengthening Participation in Vande Bharat Program
Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman & Managing Director of Titagarh Rail Systems, highlighted the significance of the agreement. He stated, “The signing of this long-term maintenance agreement is an important milestone in Titagarh’s journey and further strengthens our association with the Vande Bharat programme.” Chowdhary emphasized the companies' commitment beyond manufacturing, extending to supporting products throughout their operational lifecycle.
The 35-year maintenance commitment underscores the trust placed in the capabilities and processes of both companies. It also signals their readiness to provide long-term lifecycle support across their rolling stock programmes. This development solidifies TRSL and BHEL's long-term participation in the Indian Railways' ambitious Vande Bharat sleeper train initiative, providing visibility over several decades.
Together, BHEL and Titagarh Rail Systems aim to contribute significantly to India’s vision of modern, efficient, and self-reliant passenger rail transportation through the 'Designed and Made in India' Vande Bharat trains, supporting the 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) initiative.
