BHEL Shares: Brokerages Split on 40% Rally or 63% Crash After Q1 Profit

· · 3 min read

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) returned to profit in Q1 FY27, sparking sharply divided opinions among brokerages. Some analysts foresee a 40% upside, while others warn of a potential 63% crash, reflecting significant market uncertainty.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) is at the center of investor debate following its robust financial performance for the first quarter ended June 30, 2026. The public sector undertaking (PSU) reported a net profit of Rs 376.71 crore, a significant turnaround from a net loss of Rs 455.50 crore in the same period last year. Revenue from operations surged by 40.29% year-on-year to Rs 7,697.72 crore, and the company also achieved positive EBITDA of Rs 503.86 crore.

Despite these strong results, brokerage firms, both domestic and global, are sharply divided on the future trajectory of BHEL shares. While some maintain a bullish outlook, projecting substantial gains, others express caution, warning of a significant downside.

Bullish Outlook: Strong Order Book Fuels Optimism

Analysts with a positive view on BHEL emphasize the company's record order book, which stood at Rs 2.6 lakh crore as of Q1 FY27, up 27% year-on-year. This substantial pipeline provides strong revenue visibility across critical sectors such as thermal power, nuclear, defense, transmission, and other infrastructure segments. Improving project execution has already translated into better financial performance, with expectations of continued growth driven by operating leverage and a richer mix of higher-margin businesses.

Several brokerages have issued 'Buy' or 'Add' ratings:

  • ICICIDirect: Target price of Rs 575.
  • Dolat Capital: Upgraded to 'BUY' with a revised target of Rs 525.
  • Antique Stock Broking: Reiterate 'buy' with an unchanged target of Rs 527.
  • Phillip Capital: 'Buy' rating with a target of Rs 500.
  • JM Financial: 'Buy' rating with a target of Rs 481.
  • 360 One Capital: 'Buy' rating with a target of Rs 537.
  • IIFL: 'Add' tag with a target price of Rs 502.

The most optimistic projections suggest a potential 40% rally from current levels, fueled by robust order inflows, including a recent Rs 21,000 crore order from MUNPL for a 3x800 MW TPP project.

Bearish Views: Cyclical Concerns and Valuation Risks

Conversely, a segment of analysts remains cautious, citing several risks that could impact BHEL's performance. Concerns include the moderating pace of thermal power orders, the inherent cyclical nature of the capital goods business, and increasing competition from renewable energy sources and battery storage solutions. Some also believe that much of the near-term optimism is already priced into the stock's current valuation.

Brokerages with a 'Neutral', 'Underweight', 'Reduce', or 'Sell' stance include:

  • UBS: Maintained 'Neutral' rating with a target price of Rs 460.
  • JP Morgan: 'Underweight' rating with a target price of Rs 220, citing a likely reduction in order inflows.
  • Macquarie: 'Underperform' rating with a target price of Rs 315.
  • PL Capital: 'Reduce' call with a target price of Rs 368.
  • CLSA: 'Reduce' call with a target price of Rs 306.
  • Axis Capital: 'Sell' call with a target price of Rs 255.
  • Kotak Institutional Equities: 'Sell' call with the lowest target price of Rs 150, implying a significant 63% crash.

These cautious views underscore the potential long-term threats posed by the shift towards greener energy and the normalization of coal-based capacity ordering, suggesting that BHEL's current stock price may already fully factor in its long-term profit potential.

As BHEL shares navigate this period of diverging expert opinions, investors will closely monitor the company's execution of its massive order book and the broader shifts in India's energy and infrastructure landscape.
