Market veteran Ajay Bagga projects a significant divergence in India Inc.’s earnings outlook for the fiscal year 2027 (FY27). According to Bagga, key sectors like banking, information technology (IT), defence, and power are strongly positioned for substantial earnings upgrades, signaling a shift in market leadership.
Conversely, consumer staples and two-wheeler segments may experience continued pressure, primarily due to an uneven monsoon season potentially constraining rural demand. This analytical perspective comes as investors scrutinize June-quarter results and foreign investment flows begin to stabilize, suggesting that future market movements will be increasingly driven by actual earnings performance rather than broad liquidity.
Banks Poised for Re-rating Amid Strong Credit Growth
Bagga remains notably bullish on the financial sector, particularly banks. Despite acknowledging a slight moderation in Net Interest Margins (NIMs) and persistent margin pressure, he emphasizes that robust credit growth and healthy capitalization levels are strong tailwinds. "The banks are very well capitalized, and there is credit growth," Bagga stated, indicating that these factors could lead to further re-rating for banking stocks.
IT Sector Gathering Momentum for Rerating
The IT sector, which had lagged for an extended period, is now showing signs of a sustained revival. Bagga, who had made a contrarian call on IT three months prior, observes that this prediction is now materializing. A recent uptick in IT indices over the past few weeks suggests the commencement of a broader rerating cycle. Given IT's heavyweight status in the market, a prolonged recovery could significantly enhance benchmark earnings expectations.
Defence and Power: Structural Growth Drivers
Beyond immediate earnings cycles, Bagga identifies defence, industrials, and the broader power ecosystem as structural outperformers. The defence sector benefits from substantial order books, ensuring consistent demand. The power opportunity is expansive, encompassing everything from renewable energy generation and storage solutions to power grids, transmission infrastructure, and traditional power generators.
This comprehensive view aligns with an overarching market trend where sectors linked to infrastructure development, domestic capital expenditure, and long-term policy support are increasingly favored by investors. This suggests that FY27 upgrades might be less reliant on traditional defensive stocks and more on segments tied to India's ongoing investment cycle.
Rural Demand Woes for Staples and Two-Wheelers
In contrast to the optimism surrounding growth sectors, Bagga flagged consumer-facing businesses heavily reliant on rural markets as vulnerable. "Consumer staples will be edgy because of the iffy monsoon," he warned, noting that while rainfall trends have improved, rural demand is likely to remain constrained. This caution extends to the two-wheeler segment, which historically correlates closely with hinterland consumption patterns. Urban demand, however, appears to be holding up better, creating a distinct divergence within the overall consumption landscape and favoring categories with stronger city-led demand.
Automobiles and Telecom Also Show Resilience
Among other cyclical sectors, Bagga holds a constructive view on automobiles, particularly passenger and commercial vehicles. This perspective suggests that discretionary urban spending and freight-linked economic activities are proving more resilient than rural-driven consumption. He also maintains a positive outlook on the telecom sector.
