· · 2 min read

HDFC Bank has named Anup Bagchi as its new Managing Director and CEO for a three-year term, effective October 27. He will succeed Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose second term concludes on October 26, 2026. Bagchi brings over three decades of financial services expertise.

HDFC Bank, India's largest private sector lender, has announced the appointment of Anup Bagchi as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Bagchi's three-year term is set to commence on October 27, 2026, marking a significant leadership transition for the banking giant.

Bagchi to Succeed Sashidhar Jagdishan

Bagchi will take the helm from Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose current second term as MD and CEO concludes on October 26, 2026. Jagdishan has led HDFC Bank since October 2020, following the long tenure of Aditya Puri. Notably, Jagdishan oversaw the historic merger of mortgage lender HDFC Ltd with HDFC Bank in 2023, a pivotal moment in the bank's history.

A Veteran with Three Decades of Experience

Anup Bagchi brings extensive experience to his new role. He joins HDFC Bank from ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, where he served as MD and CEO since June 2023. His career spans over three decades across various facets of financial services, including banking, capital markets, and insurance.

  • Prior to his role at ICICI Prudential Life, Bagchi held senior positions within the ICICI Group.
  • He served as an Executive Director on the board of ICICI Bank.
  • Bagchi also previously led ICICI Securities as its Managing Director and CEO.

His tenure at ICICI Bank encompassed a broad spectrum of responsibilities, including retail and wholesale banking, digital channels, rural and inclusive banking, market operations, data analytics, and technology-driven financial services.

Educational Background

Academically, Bagchi is an alumnus of two of India's premier institutions. He holds a degree in chemical engineering from IIT Kanpur and furthered his education at IIM Bangalore, underscoring a strong foundation in both technical and management disciplines.

Succession Process Concludes

This appointment concludes a closely observed succession process at HDFC Bank. The bank's board had submitted two candidates for the MD and CEO position to the Reserve Bank of India for approval in September, with Bagchi ultimately receiving the nod. The leadership change comes after Jagdishan informed the board he would not seek reappointment after his current term ends.
