Ankur Warikoo Warns WhatsApp Username Feature Risks Impersonation Scams in India

· · 2 min read

Entrepreneur Ankur Warikoo has cautioned that WhatsApp's new username feature, allowing connections without phone numbers, could lead to widespread impersonation scams in India. He highlighted the ease with which fraudsters might create fake accounts mimicking public figures to solicit money.

Entrepreneur and content creator Ankur Warikoo has issued a strong warning regarding WhatsApp's newly introduced username feature, cautioning that it poses a significant risk for impersonation scams, particularly in India. The feature, announced by WhatsApp to allow users to connect without sharing their phone numbers, could, according to Warikoo, become a "disaster" if Meta fails to implement robust anti-abuse systems.

Risk of Impersonation and Financial Fraud

Warikoo highlighted how the username feature could simplify the creation of fake accounts designed to mimic public figures. Scammers could register usernames with minor variations of well-known names—such as "warikoo," "awarikoo," or "ankur_warikoo"—and use them to solicit money from unsuspecting users. He emphasized the scale of this potential problem in a country like India, where online scams are already prevalent.

"In a country such as India, this could be a disaster, if the right anti-abuse systems are not set up by WhatsApp," Warikoo stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Key Concerns Over User Verification

Warikoo outlined two primary reasons why he believes the new feature could lead to widespread confusion and exploitation:

  • Misunderstanding of Verified Accounts: Many users do not fully grasp the concept or significance of a verified account, making them vulnerable to sophisticated impersonators.
  • Loss of Phone Number Verification: Since usernames are intended to keep phone numbers private, users will lose the ability to easily verify an account's authenticity by simply calling the linked number, a common practice for confirmation.

Drawing on personal experience, Warikoo mentioned his ongoing legal battle against Meta concerning AI-generated ads that misused his likeness to lure people into fraudulent investment groups. This experience underscores his concerns about the ease with which such scams can be executed in India.

WhatsApp's Stated Purpose

WhatsApp officially announced the introduction of usernames, stating that "Your phone number is personal and sometimes you want to connect without handing it over. That's why we're introducing usernames for WhatsApp." The platform indicated that users could begin reserving usernames shortly, ahead of a wider rollout later in the year. The process is designed to be quick, requiring users to update their app and navigate to Settings > Account > Username.

While the feature aims to enhance user privacy, Warikoo's warnings have ignited a discussion about the necessity for stronger verification protocols and anti-impersonation safeguards before a broad deployment, especially in regions highly susceptible to online fraud.
