A leading market analyst has weighed in on two major Indian automotive stocks, Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland, revealing his preference for near-term gains. Rachit Khandelwal, Head Research & Investor Education at B&K Securities, advises investors to hold Tata Motors shares despite its strong long-term fundamentals, while highlighting Ashok Leyland as a more immediate opportunity for upside.
Tata Motors: Long-Term Potential Amidst Governance Concerns
Khandelwal acknowledges Tata Motors' robust position in the Indian passenger vehicle market, particularly its dominant share in electric vehicles (over 50% of the EV segment). He views the company's product pipeline and market standing against competitors like Mahindra as strong drivers for its broader growth thesis.
However, immediate sentiment for Tata Group stocks, including Tata Motors, is being dampened by ongoing governance uncertainties. Khandelwal points to the leadership-related issues and the reappointment debate concerning N. Chandrasekaran as factors keeping investors cautious. He suggests that a significant rerating is unlikely until these board-level developments are resolved and a clearer picture emerges.
Despite this caution, the analyst recommends holding Tata Motors rather than exiting. He believes that the market has already factored in much of the negative news, and the long-term growth story remains intact. Technically, he suggests a move above ₹348 could open paths to ₹400 and eventually ₹440, but stresses that such gains would "seriously take some time," positioning Tata Motors as a patience-driven investment.
Ashok Leyland: Geared for Near-Term Upside
In contrast to Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland is presented as a stock with more immediate upside potential. Khandelwal notes that after a recent correction, the counter appears "all geared up to go up again."
He has set a near-term target of ₹180 for Ashok Leyland. More significantly, a decisive breach and sustained hold above ₹186 could trigger a sharper rally, with the potential to reach ₹224 within the current quarter. This makes Ashok Leyland the more actionable choice for traders and investors seeking quicker returns, distinguishing it from Tata Motors' fundamentally attractive but sentiment-constrained narrative.
