Alstom, the global leader in sustainable mobility, is actively pursuing a significant new order from Indian Railways for an additional 200 electric freight locomotives. This potential contract would succeed their current agreement to supply 800 high-power locomotives, which is on track for completion by March 2028.
Expanding Production at Madhepura
Vivek Garg, Managing Director of Madhepura Electric Locomotive Pvt Ltd (MELPL), confirmed that discussions are underway with Indian Railways for these supplementary supplies. MELPL, a public-private joint venture established in 2015 between Alstom and Indian Railways, is responsible for manufacturing and maintaining 12,000-horsepower electric freight locomotives.
This venture represents one of India’s largest foreign direct investment projects within the railway sector, underscoring its strategic importance to the nation's infrastructure development.
Boosting Local Sourcing Initiatives
Currently, nearly 90 percent of the components for these powerful locomotives are sourced domestically, though wheels and axles continue to be imported. MELPL is engaging with Indian suppliers, including Ramkrishna Forgings, to localize the supply chain for these critical parts.
Garg emphasized that securing the follow-on order for 200 locomotives would provide the necessary incentive and stability for local suppliers to invest further in manufacturing capabilities, thereby increasing the domestic content even more. Discussions are also ongoing with other emerging wheel manufacturing units across the country to strengthen the localization drive.
Future Prospects and Technological Advancements
Beyond new orders, MELPL also holds maintenance contracts for the existing fleet of locomotives. This ensures a steady, cyclic demand for replacement parts like wheels and axles, which could further benefit local manufacturers.
The existing contract with Indian Railways allows for modifications to the locomotives based on customer requirements. Furthermore, Alstom, a pioneer in hydrogen and battery technology for rail transport, sees potential for the Madhepura plant to contribute to future innovations, including the manufacturing of hydrogen-powered trains, aligning with India's push for greener transportation solutions.
