Airbus has successfully completed a 24-hour endurance test flight of Qantas' A350-1000ULR aircraft, flying non-stop from Melbourne to Toulouse. This marks a critical step for Project Sunrise, aiming for the world's longest commercial routes.

Airbus has successfully concluded a landmark 24-hour endurance test flight for Qantas’ forthcoming A350-1000ULR aircraft. This significant milestone brings the Australian airline closer to realizing its ambitious Project Sunrise, which aims to establish ultra-long-haul direct flights, potentially revolutionizing international air travel.

The test aircraft, registered F-WULR and named Vega, completed a non-stop journey from Melbourne, Australia, to Toulouse, France, on July 28, 2026. The flight covered an immense distance of 12,460 nautical miles over the Pacific and North America. According to Flightradar24 data, the journey lasted 24 hours and 23 minutes, closely tracked by over 120,000 aviation enthusiasts worldwide.

Paving the Way for Project Sunrise

This A350-1000ULR is the first of 12 such planes destined for Qantas. These aircraft are central to Project Sunrise, an initiative designed to operate direct commercial flights connecting Australia with major global hubs like London and New York. Once operational, the Australia-UK route is anticipated to become the world's longest commercial flight service.

The A350-1000ULR features a specially fitted rear center fuel tank, extending its range by approximately 1,000 nautical miles. Airbus engineers are utilizing these rigorous test flights to meticulously evaluate aircraft performance, passenger comfort, and onboard systems during these exceptionally long journeys.

Focus on Passenger Well-being

Qantas is placing a strong emphasis on enhancing the passenger experience for these extended flights, aiming to ensure travelers arrive feeling refreshed even after journeys exceeding 20 hours. To achieve this, the A350-1000ULR will be configured with a significantly reduced seating capacity of just 238 seats. Qantas highlights this as the "lowest seat density of any A350 around the world," designed to provide passengers with greater personal space and comfort.

The airline has invested nearly a decade in researching optimal cabin design. This extensive research involved collaborations with institutions like the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre, Caon Design Office, and various technology partners, all focused on creating a more comfortable and less fatiguing environment for ultra-long-haul travel.

The advancements in ultra-long-haul aircraft technology, demonstrated by this Airbus A350 test flight, hold significant implications for global connectivity.
