The Adani Group is moving forward with its ambitious entry into India's nuclear energy sector, partnering with engineering and construction conglomerate Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for its upcoming atomic power projects. This collaboration is set to leverage L&T's extensive experience in the nuclear domain, particularly in manufacturing and project management.
Strategic Partnership for Nuclear Ambitions
Adani Group is currently in discussions with L&T regarding the construction of nuclear power plants, as it identifies and finalizes potential sites across the country. L&T, a recognized leader in Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) within the nuclear sector, has a long history of supporting technology development, manufacturing, and localization efforts in India.
The partnership, however, hinges on a crucial factor: the approval of specific nuclear technology by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL). Sources indicate that project work will commence once the government outlines the civil nuclear power technologies permissible for private sector adoption.
Adani's Entry into Atomic Energy
Earlier this year, Adani Power established Adani Atomic Energy Limited, a new subsidiary focused on generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity derived from nuclear energy. This move signaled the conglomerate's formal entry into India's evolving atomic power landscape, a sector recently opened to private participation.
The opening of the nuclear energy sector was facilitated by the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, passed in December 2025. Despite the legislative framework, the government is yet to release a detailed operational framework for private players, which is essential for projects to proceed.
L&T's Proven Track Record
L&T's expertise in the nuclear field is well-established. In September 2025, its Heavy Civil Infrastructure vertical secured a significant contract from NPCIL for the 2x1000 MWe Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (Units 5 & 6) in Tamil Nadu. This contract includes a comprehensive mechanical package covering the installation of nuclear reactors, turbine systems, generators, and condensers.
Additionally, L&T's Heavy Engineering division has consistently contributed to India's nuclear program, including the dispatch of seven 700 MWe Steam Generators for NPCIL ahead of schedule, demonstrating adherence to stringent quality and safety standards.
Adani's Roadmap and Future Steps
S.B. Khyalia, CEO of Adani Power Ltd., confirmed that the company has finalized greenfield sites for its nuclear power plants and is actively pursuing necessary approvals from authorities. He emphasized that the company is in a preparatory phase, awaiting the government's notification of rules that will clarify the type, size, and capacity of nuclear projects it can undertake.
Adani Group is identifying new, dedicated sites for these projects, distinguishing them from existing thermal power plant locations that other corporate groups might be exploring. The company aims to move swiftly once the regulatory framework is in place.
