Adani Group Considers €3 Billion Acquisition of Dutch Energy Storage Giant VTTI

· · 2 min read

Adani Group is reportedly evaluating a potential €3 billion acquisition of Rotterdam-based energy storage firm VTTI, aiming to expand its international footprint. The Dutch company operates a global network of terminals for fuels and chemicals.

The Adani Group, an Indian conglomerate, is reportedly among several suitors exploring a potential acquisition of the Dutch energy storage operator VTTI. This strategic move, which could value VTTI at approximately €3 billion ($3.4 billion), underscores Adani's aggressive push to expand its overseas infrastructure portfolio, according to a recent Bloomberg report.

VTTI: A Global Energy Storage Player

Rotterdam-based VTTI operates a vast international network of terminals crucial for storing a diverse range of energy products and chemicals. Its facilities handle fossil fuels, biofuels, and various solvents, making its infrastructure increasingly valuable amidst global energy supply disruptions. The company is currently co-owned by Australian infrastructure manager IFM Investors Pty and commodities giant Vitol SA, each holding roughly 45% stakes, with Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (Adnoc) owning the remaining 10%.

Sources indicate that Adnoc is considering a complete divestment of its stake, while IFM and Vitol may also look to reduce their holdings in any potential transaction. However, deliberations are ongoing, and there is no certainty that a deal will materialize, as other bidders are also actively pursuing a stake in the business.

Adani's International Expansion Strategy

An acquisition of VTTI would significantly broaden the international reach of the Adani Group, which already boasts an extensive portfolio spanning ports, airports, data centers, mining, defense, and power infrastructure. The conglomerate, led by India’s wealthiest person Gautam Adani, has been strategically expanding its global presence through a series of key maneuvers.

Earlier this year, the flagship entity Adani Enterprises Ltd. successfully raised 150 billion rupees ($1.6 billion) from institutional investors to fund capital expenditures and manage debt. Furthermore, Gautam Adani recently secured the dismissal of US securities fraud charges, removing a significant hurdle that had previously cast a shadow over the group's global ambitions.

This isn't Adani's first foray into European infrastructure. The group previously evaluated a stake in Associated British Ports, the UK’s largest port operator, though IFM Investors ultimately secured that bid in a deal valued at approximately £10 billion ($13.4 billion). The current interest in VTTI highlights Adani's continued focus on acquiring critical energy infrastructure assets to bolster its worldwide footprint.
