Actor Omi Vaidya, widely recognized for his role as Chatur in the blockbuster film '3 Idiots,' has issued an urgent public appeal concerning the deteriorating health of renowned Ladakhi innovator Sonam Wangchuk. Wangchuk, who served as a loose inspiration for the film's protagonist, Phunsukh Wangdu, has been on an indefinite hunger strike in Delhi for over two weeks.
Omi Vaidya's Urgent Plea
In a video shared on social media, Vaidya expressed his concern, stating, "I don't want Phunsukh Wangdu to die." He highlighted Wangchuk's significant contributions as an engineer, educator, and reformer, urging the public to take notice of his protest. Vaidya noted that Wangchuk's health has significantly declined, with a reported loss of nearly 9 kilograms and critically low blood sugar levels after 16 days of fasting.
The Man Behind 'Phunsukh Wangdu'
Sonam Wangchuk is a celebrated Ladakhi engineer, innovator, and education reformist, known for his groundbreaking work in sustainable development and educational initiatives. His life and philosophies significantly influenced the character of Phunsukh Wangdu in '3 Idiots,' a connection Vaidya emphasized in his appeal to draw public awareness to the activist's current plight.
Wangchuk's Protest Demands
Wangchuk joined the 'Cockroach Janta Party' (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on June 28, initiating his indefinite hunger strike. The core of his protest revolves around alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) examination. Protesters, including Wangchuk, are demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and significant compensation for families of NEET aspirants who reportedly died by suicide following the controversy.
Beyond the immediate NEET issue, Wangchuk's broader activism also encompasses environmental concerns and advocacy for greater autonomy for Ladakh, issues he has championed for many years.
Growing Support and Calls for Action
The actor's appeal quickly gained traction, with prominent figures like activist and lawyer Prashant Bhushan amplifying Vaidya's message on social media. Bhushan notably questioned the silence of Aamir Khan, the lead actor of '3 Idiots,' regarding Wangchuk's protest. The CJP's agitation, which entered its 24th day, has garnered support from various opposition leaders and student groups, with a peaceful march to Parliament planned for July 20, coinciding with the opening of the Monsoon Session.
As Sonam Wangchuk's health continues to be a critical concern, Vaidya's plea serves as a potent reminder of the real-world impact of the issues raised by the Ladakhi activist.
