19-Year-Old Quits IIT Path, Raises $3M for AI Startup Supermemory

· · 2 min read

Mumbai native Dhravya Shah, 19, left his B.Tech program at IIT Bombay to found Supermemory, an AI startup. The company recently secured $3 million in seed funding from investors including Google executives.

Nineteen-year-old Dhravya Shah, originally from Mumbai, has made a significant mark in Silicon Valley with his AI startup, Supermemory. Shah chose to forgo his B.Tech program at IIT Bombay to pursue entrepreneurship, a decision that has now culminated in securing $3 million (approximately ₹28 crore) in seed funding.

The Genesis of Supermemory

Shah's journey into AI began during his preparation for the demanding IIT entrance exam, where he developed a small AI tool as a side project. The revenue generated from this early venture enabled him to relocate to the United States. There, he successfully obtained an O-1 visa, a special category for individuals demonstrating "extraordinary ability" in fields such as technology and business.

Upon moving to the U.S., Shah embarked on an ambitious challenge: to launch a new product every week for 40 consecutive weeks. It was through this rigorous process of continuous innovation that Supermemory emerged as a viable concept and eventually attracted significant investor interest.

What Supermemory Does

Supermemory addresses a critical limitation in current artificial intelligence applications. Many AI systems treat each interaction as isolated, lacking the ability to retain context or information over time. Supermemory provides AI systems with a form of long-term memory, allowing them to:

  • Remember past interactions and user context.
  • Work seamlessly with various data types, including emails, files, chats, PDFs, and other documents.
  • Retain learned information across multiple engagements, eliminating the need to start from scratch with every new query.

This innovative AI memory system enables more sophisticated and human-like interactions with AI-powered applications.

Funding and Key Investors

The seed funding round, totaling $3 million, saw participation from prominent investors and venture capital firms. Key backers include individuals associated with major technology companies like Google, OpenAI, and Cloudflare. Notable investors include Jeff Dean of Google AI and Logan Kilpatrick from DeepMind. The round was led by Susa Ventures, Browder Capital, and SF1.vc.

A Path Less Traveled

Dhravya Shah's decision to pursue an entrepreneurial path rather than completing a traditional IIT education highlights a growing trend among young innovators. Before even reaching the age of 20, Shah had already launched over 15 open-source projects, successfully sold two companies, and founded a solo AI startup now valued in the millions. His trajectory underscores the potential for rapid innovation and success outside conventional academic routes.
