Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) temporarily suspended the account of the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD Forum), the organization hosting Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat's upcoming New York event. The account, @AheadForum1, was restored hours later after AHEAD appealed the decision, claiming the suspension was an error.
The brief suspension occurred just days before Bhagwat is scheduled to headline the 'Universal Oneness Celebration' at Madison Square Garden’s Infosys Theatre on August 29. AHEAD Forum, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has been actively promoting the multicultural and interfaith gathering, which aims to foster peace, social harmony, and mutual understanding.
Following the reinstatement of their account, AHEAD Forum posted a thank you message to X Support, stating they believed the suspension was due to "misguided opponents who tried to game the X algorithm and get our handle blocked." The organization reiterated its focus on celebrating "Universal Harmony and Universal Oneness."
Controversy Surrounds Bhagwat's US Tour
Mohan Bhagwat's appearance in New York is part of a broader outreach tour spanning the US, Canada, and the UK. However, the event has drawn considerable opposition from various civil rights groups, including Hindus for Human Rights. These groups plan protests, accusing the RSS of promoting an exclusionary majoritarian ideology.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has publicly stated his opposition to the event, though he acknowledged the city's limited legal authority to cancel a private gathering. Conversely, singer and actor Mary Millben has defended the program and its "Oneness" theme, criticizing opponents for what she described as hostility towards Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.
The Hindu American Foundation has issued an advisory to attendees, urging them to remain vigilant, maintain situational awareness, and ensure interactions remain civil during the gathering amid the ongoing controversy.
