The political landscape in Uttar Pradesh is heating up ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, with the contest for the 10th seat becoming a focal point of intense speculation and strategic maneuvering. Both the ruling NDA and the Opposition's Samajwadi Party (SP) are closely monitoring their legislators amidst claims of potential cross-voting.
Cross-Voting Claims Intensify Battle for 10th Seat
The Samajwadi Party has publicly stated that several NDA (National Democratic Alliance) MLAs are in communication with them, indicating a willingness to cross-vote if guaranteed tickets for future elections. This development has turned the race for the 10th Rajya Sabha seat into a high-stakes battle, as neither the SP nor the BJP possesses the clear numbers to secure an extra seat independently.
The Numbers Game: Who Needs What?
- A maximum of 395 votes can be cast in the election, considering seven vacant Assembly seats.
- To win one Rajya Sabha seat, a candidate requires 37 votes.
- The Samajwadi Party, after accounting for past rebellions, holds 99 votes, including those of two Congress MLAs.
- For the SP to secure three seats, they need a total of 108 votes, meaning they require nine additional votes for their third candidate.
Sources within the SP suggest that votes from two Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) MLAs, Abbas Ansari and Jagdish Narayan Rai, are likely to support the SP. Jagdish Narayan Rai has a history of voting for SP candidates in previous elections. Additionally, SP strategists claim to be in touch with MLAs from the Nishad Party and Apna Dal (S), some of whom are reportedly ready to switch allegiance if assured future election tickets.
Unhappy NDA Ministers and BJP MLAs in Contact with SP
The Samajwadi Party's claims extend to the BJP's own ranks, asserting that two ministers in the BJP government are uneasy due to the possibility of being denied tickets. One minister, from western Uttar Pradesh, is reportedly facing changed political equations with the entry of the RLD, while the other minister has allegedly already met with SP leadership.
SP sources claim six to seven BJP MLAs are in contact with the party and may cross-vote if promised tickets, which could be crucial for securing the additional votes needed for their third candidate.
These allegations underscore the precarious nature of the upcoming election, where individual loyalties and political ambitions could significantly sway the outcome for the critical 10th Rajya Sabha seat.
