UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark warning, stating that the planet is in “uncharted waters” as the current El Niño weather pattern intensifies rapidly. Guterres emphasized that this “supersized” El Niño event holds the potential to deliver massive blows to communities across the globe, urging immediate climate action.
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon that typically emerges every two to seven years and lasts for approximately a year. It involves the warming of ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, which influences global weather patterns. According to a report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the current El Niño is projected to strengthen further in the coming months, reaching its peak towards the end of the year and extending well into 2027.
A Planet in the Danger Zone
“El Niño is being supersized before our eyes. The science leaves no room for doubt: the planet is in uncharted waters, and those waters are heating up,” Guterres stated, as reported by the WMO. He added that sea surface temperatures and overall global temperatures continue to climb, pushing the world into a “danger zone of extreme weather.” The Secretary-General stressed that the critical challenge now is a race between rising risks and the global commitment to undertake climate action and protect populations.
WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo echoed these concerns, noting that El Niño carries the potential for significant disruption and devastation for both communities and economies worldwide. “We are already seeing disruption and devastation from droughts and floods, and we expect these impacts to increase as El Niño intensifies,” Saulo explained, highlighting the immediate and future threats posed by the phenomenon.
Global and Regional Impacts Expected
In response to the escalating threat, Saulo indicated that the WMO has initiated an unprecedented mobilization effort to deliver enhanced forecasts and services. This proactive measure aims to save lives and protect livelihoods in the face of the anticipated impacts of El Niño, which demands exceptional preparation and response from nations.
Regionally, India is among the countries expected to experience significant weather anomalies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast below-normal rainfall for September, attributing this deficiency, in part, to the influence of El Niño. The IMD also noted that the weather pattern contributed to the rainfall shortfalls observed during August.
