Twisha Sharma Death: CBI Gets 5-Day Custody of Ex-Judge Giribala Singh, Her Mother-in-Law

· · 3 min read

The CBI secured five-day custody of former judge Giribala Singh, mother-in-law of alleged dowry-death victim Twisha Sharma, from a Bhopal court. Her son and Twisha's husband, Samarth Singh, also had his custody extended as the agency probes the death.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been granted five-day custody of former judge Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law of alleged dowry-death victim Twisha Sharma. A Bhopal district court issued the order on Friday, May 29, 2026. Concurrently, the agency also received a five-day extension for the custody of Samarth Singh, Giribala Singh's son and Twisha's husband.

Giribala Singh's arrest by the CBI occurred on Thursday following the Madhya Pradesh High Court's cancellation of her anticipatory bail in the high-profile case. The Supreme Court had previously directed the CBI to take over the investigation and proceed with it swiftly, while cautioning both Twisha Sharma's family and the accused against making public statements.

Investigation Intensifies with Mother-Son Confrontation Planned

Officials confirmed that Giribala Singh was arrested at her Bhopal residence in the Bag Mughaliya extension area after extensive questioning. Samarth Singh, a lawyer, was already in the central agency's custody. The CBI intends to confront the mother-son duo with each other's statements as part of their comprehensive probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 33-year-old former model-actor.

  • May 15, 2026: An FIR was registered by the police based on the autopsy report and statements from Twisha's family.
  • May 24, 2026: A second post-mortem was conducted in Bhopal by a team of doctors from AIIMS-Delhi, following directions from the Madhya Pradesh High Court after her parents raised concerns about procedural lapses.

Allegations of Dowry Harassment and Evidence Tampering

Twisha's family has vehemently alleged that she faced relentless torment and domestic violence from her husband and in-laws due to their dissatisfaction with the dowry provided at the time of her marriage on December 9, 2025. During the high court proceedings, the family's counsels argued that Twisha was subjected to severe mental harassment and was "badly stuck" in her matrimonial home.

Further allegations include claims that Giribala Singh attempted to tamper with evidence after securing bail. Specifically, it was stated that while police seized CCTV footage from her house on May 13, selective clips were later leaked on social media in an alleged effort to influence the ongoing investigation.
