Tulsi Gabbard Resigns as DNI Citing Husband's Rare Cancer Diagnosis

Tulsi Gabbard announced her resignation as Director of National Intelligence, effective June 30, 2026. She cited her husband, Abraham Williams', diagnosis with an "extremely rare form of bone cancer" as the reason for stepping down to provide support.

Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence in President Donald Trump’s administration, has announced her resignation, citing a deeply personal reason: her husband’s recent diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer. Her departure will become effective on June 30, 2026.

In a resignation letter dated May 22, 2026, addressed to President Trump, Gabbard explained that her husband, Abraham Williams, had been diagnosed with an "extremely rare form of bone cancer." She stated that she needed to step away from public service to support him through his illness, emphasizing that she could not, in good conscience, continue in such a demanding role while he faced significant health challenges.

Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii, transitioned to the Republican Party and endorsed Trump in the 2024 election. She assumed the role of Director of National Intelligence in February 2025 following Senate confirmation. During her tenure, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the intelligence community and highlighted efforts aimed at increasing transparency and fostering trust within the agencies.

Her time as DNI was not without scrutiny, with reports suggesting internal tensions within the Trump administration regarding her influence on national security decisions. Policy disagreements, particularly concerning Iran and US intelligence assessments, also characterized her leadership. Despite these challenges, Gabbard framed her resignation as a strictly personal decision driven by her family’s health crisis, rather than political differences.

Gabbard has pledged to ensure a smooth and thorough transition for her successor before her official departure.
