Trump Scales Back US-South Korea Drills After Seoul Declines Iran Denuclearization Role

· · 2 min read

Former President Trump ordered the Pentagon to significantly reduce joint US-South Korea military exercises after Seoul declined to join a US push for Iran's denuclearization. He also cited his "very good relationship" with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a factor.

Former President Donald Trump has ordered a substantial reduction in joint US-South Korea military exercises, a decision he directly linked to Seoul's refusal to participate in a US-led initiative for the denuclearization of Iran.

In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump revealed he had asked South Korea's president whether the nation would join the United States in its efforts regarding Iran. He stated the response was a blunt: "No thanks!"

Drills Curtailed After Seoul's Rejection

Trump confirmed that he instructed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to significantly curtail the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, scheduled from August 17 to 27. While acknowledging it was too late to cancel the drills entirely, he mandated that participation be meaningfully reduced.

This move highlights a notable strain in the long-standing security alliance between the United States and South Korea, an alliance that has been a cornerstone of US strategy in the Indo-Pacific for decades.

The North Korea Dimension

Beyond the Iran question, Trump also expressed his long-held discomfort with the joint exercises, citing his "very good relationship" with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He characterized the drills as costly and sending an "inappropriate and hostile" signal to Pyongyang.

Trump emphasized that North Korea had remained "unthreatening and respectful" during his presidency, framing the joint exercises as an unnecessary provocation against a country with which he has sought to maintain diplomatic terms. This perspective adds another layer to his decision to scale back the military cooperation.

Broader Geopolitical Context

These remarks come amidst an ongoing US military campaign against Iran and Washington's efforts to garner international support for pressuring Tehran over its nuclear program. South Korea's decision to abstain from this effort, combined with Trump's public rebuke, underscores growing complexities and potential fissures within international alliances during a period of heightened global tensions.
