Tripura's Director General of Police (DGP), Anurag Dhankar, was discovered deceased inside his office at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Agartala on Monday. Initial reports suggest the senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer died by suicide, prompting an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Dhankar was reportedly found hanging within his office chamber. He was swiftly transported to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital, where medical staff made attempts to revive him. Dr. Pradip Bhowmik, a senior doctor at GBP Hospital, stated that Dhankar arrived with no vital signs and, despite 48 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by an expert team, was officially declared dead at 12:48 PM.
Official Confirmation and Medical Details
Kiran Gitte, IAS, the Secretary to the Chief Minister, confirmed the tragic incident, noting that preliminary information points towards an alleged suicide. However, Gitte emphasized that the exact conditions leading to the DGP's death are yet to be officially established.
Dr. Bhowmik clarified that given Dhankar was brought in without vital signs, doctors could not diagnose any underlying medical conditions at that point. As a "brought-in-dead" case, the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. When questioned about visible marks or the specific cause, Dr. Bhowmik stated that only the post-mortem report would provide definitive answers, as the critical situation upon arrival prevented a detailed external examination by the emergency team.

Senior police officials quickly arrived at the PHQ following the discovery, securing the area. An investigation has been launched to thoroughly examine the events leading to Dhankar's demise. Police authorities have yet to issue a formal statement, awaiting the findings of the post-mortem examination to ascertain the precise cause of death.
