Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has revoked the controversial appointment of astrologer Rickey Radhan Pandit Vettrivel as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Chief Minister's office. The decision, announced on May 13, 2026, came just a day after Vettrivel's elevation, which had ignited significant political backlash across Tamil Nadu.
The appointment drew sharp criticism from various political entities, including key alliance partners of Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM), and the Communist Party of India (CPI). These parties, crucial for the TVK's support, openly voiced their disapproval, putting immense pressure on the newly formed government ahead of a crucial floor test in the Assembly.
VCK MLA Vaani Arsu strongly advocated for a government rooted in scientific and rational thinking. "Our government should give importance to scientific thinking and not astrology," Arsu stated, emphasizing the need to prioritize evidence-based governance over superstitious beliefs. The Left parties echoed these sentiments, with CPI state secretary P Shanmugam asserting the government's responsibility to promote scientific temper. Shanmugam argued that using public funds to appoint an astrologer to an official role would inadvertently encourage superstition.
Opposition parties also joined the chorus of condemnation. Premalatha Vijaykanth, leader of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), questioned the Chief Minister's judgment, highlighting the negative example it set for the state's youth. "Astrologer Radhan Pandit has been appointed as OSD. I condemn this move on behalf of all Tamil Nadu people. If he is your guru, keep him in your personal capacity," Vijaykanth remarked, demanding an explanation for the message being sent to young voters who supported the TVK.
While alliance partners like the VCK and the Left did not withdraw their support, their collective dissatisfaction created a significant ripple in the political landscape. Faced with escalating criticism, Chief Minister Vijay indicated a reconsideration of the appointment. Following the Assembly floor test, he confirmed the decision to revoke Vettrivel's OSD status, effectively bringing an end to the contentious issue that had united both supporters and rivals in opposition.
