Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), have successfully navigated a critical floor test, demonstrating their majority in the state assembly. The government garnered the support of 144 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), solidifying its position.
The outcome was significantly impacted by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) staging a walkout, which reduced the effective strength of the 232-seat assembly. This action brought the revised majority threshold down to 88 votes, giving the TVK a clear advantage.
Broad Coalition Secures Victory
The 144 votes in favor of the TVK government came from a diverse coalition of parties. This included five MLAs from the Congress, two each from the Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Additionally, one MLA from the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) lent support.
A notable factor in the TVK's success was the backing of 30 rebel MLAs from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). This defection highlights significant internal divisions within the AIADMK, leaving its chief, Edappadi K. Palanisami, with only 17 legislators. S.P. Velumani, commenting on the rebel AIADMK faction's support, stated that they were not seeking ministerial posts.
CM Vijay Expresses Gratitude
Following the successful vote, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, an actor turned politician, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all the MLAs who supported his administration. He characterized his government's operations as moving with "horse-speed" and explicitly denied any involvement in "horse-trading" to secure votes.
The floor test results indicate a strong mandate for the TVK government, allowing it to continue its legislative agenda with confirmed confidence from the assembly.
