Supreme Court Demands Explanation from Rahul Gandhi Over Oct 12 Protest March

· · 2 min read

The Supreme Court has directed Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to explain his role in a protest march to the apex court on October 12. The court objected to his conduct as one of the petitioners challenging the ECI's voter roll review.

The Supreme Court of India has issued a directive to Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, compelling him to provide an explanation for his participation in a protest march to the apex court on October 12.

This order comes as the top court voiced strong objections to Gandhi's conduct, specifically noting his involvement as one of the thirteen petitioners from the INDIA bloc. The alliance had filed a plea challenging the Election Commission of India's (ECI) process for reviewing voter rolls.

Court Expresses Displeasure Over Petitioner's Actions

During the hearing of a series of petitions related to the October 10 protests, the Supreme Court took particular exception to the actions of one of the petitioners. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant explicitly stated that "nobody can browbeat" the judiciary, underscoring the court's firm stance on judicial independence.

The court had previously sought a response from the ECI regarding the petitions. However, in a significant turn, the bench remarked, "We are issuing notice on the plea, but we will seek explanation of the conduct of one of the petitioners," directly referencing Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi's Legal Representation Responds

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Rahul Gandhi in the matter, was informed by CJI Surya Kant that his client "will have to give an explanation." This indicates a serious view taken by the court regarding the protest and Gandhi's role in it, particularly as a petitioner in a related case.

The precise nature of the explanation sought and the potential implications for Gandhi and the INDIA bloc's ongoing challenge to the ECI's voter roll review remain key points of interest as further proceedings are anticipated.
