· · 2 min read

Sri Lanka has extended its visa-free entry pilot program for Indian citizens and six other countries until June 30, 2024. Travelers still need to meet standard immigration requirements, including a valid passport and confirmed return ticket.

Sri Lanka has prolonged its visa-free entry scheme for citizens from India and six other nations until June 30, 2024. The initiative, initially launched as a pilot program in October 2023, aims to bolster the island nation's tourism sector, which is a critical component of its economy.

Who Qualifies for Visa-Free Entry?

The extended program applies to travelers from the following countries:

  • India
  • China
  • Russia
  • Thailand
  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • Japan

These visitors can enter Sri Lanka without a visa for a specified period, typically up to 30 days, though exact durations should be verified with official Sri Lankan immigration authorities prior to travel.

Essential Requirements for Visa-Free Travelers

Despite the visa exemption, all travelers must adhere to standard immigration protocols upon arrival. This includes:

  • Possessing a passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry.
  • A confirmed return or onward journey ticket.
  • Sufficient funds to cover expenses during their stay.
  • Proof of confirmed accommodation.

Immigration officials at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) or other entry points reserve the right to verify these documents. Failure to meet these requirements may result in denied entry.

Boosting Tourism in Sri Lanka

The visa-free program was introduced amidst efforts to revitalize Sri Lanka's tourism industry, which faced significant setbacks due to global events and economic challenges. India has consistently been a top source market for tourists visiting Sri Lanka, making its inclusion in the exemption list particularly impactful. The extension underscores Sri Lanka's commitment to making travel more accessible and attractive for international visitors.

Travelers are advised to check the latest updates from the Sri Lankan Department of Immigration and Emigration or their respective airlines before planning their trips, as policies can change.
