· · 3 min read

Dr. Manish Gupta, a dermatologist in South Delhi, has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 45-year-old domestic worker, Meena Haldar. He reportedly attacked her with a cricket bat and knife, claiming she brought 'bad energy' into his home.

A prominent South Delhi dermatologist, Dr. Manish Gupta, has been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of his long-time domestic worker, Meena Haldar. The shocking incident unfolded on Thursday morning on the terrace of his upscale Mount Kailash apartment, with police reporting that Gupta confessed to the crime, citing a belief that Haldar brought “bad energy” into his home and negatively impacted his son’s academic performance.

Details of the Attack and Discovery

According to police statements, the tragic event occurred after Dr. Gupta's wife, also a doctor, had left for work. Meena Haldar, 45, arrived for her routine duties, which included washing clothes and taking them to the terrace to dry. It was between 11:15 AM and 11:30 AM when Gupta allegedly followed her upstairs. Police claim he first struck Haldar on the head with a cricket bat, causing her to collapse, before repeatedly stabbing her with a knife.

The crime came to light when a resident of an adjacent building noticed the victim lying in a pool of blood on the terrace and promptly alerted authorities. Police swiftly responded to the scene, recovering the blood-soaked weapons from the building.

The Accused's Alleged Motive

During interrogation, Dr. Gupta reportedly told police he had been unhappy with Meena Haldar's continued employment for some time. He expressed frustration that his family members had refused his requests to dismiss her. He allegedly harbored a belief that Haldar was responsible for introducing “bad energy” into his household and attributed his teenage son’s struggles in studies to her presence.

A Dedicated Worker Remembered

Meena Haldar had been an integral part of the Gupta household for over a decade, with her association stretching beyond 15 years. Her son, Robin, who works in Delhi’s Nehru Place area, described his mother as a hardworking, dependable, and punctual individual who had dedicated years to supporting her family through her work.

Community Reaction and Investigation

News of the murder has sent shockwaves through the Mount Kailash neighborhood, prompting outrage among domestic workers in the area. Many gathered outside the residence, demanding justice and seeking access to the victim’s body, leading to heated exchanges with the police.

Neighbors, who knew Dr. Gupta as a quiet and charitable figure with a history of donations to temples, gurudwaras, and animal welfare causes, expressed their disbelief and struggle to reconcile the grave allegations with the man they had known for years. Police confirmed Gupta's arrest shortly after the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
