A 28-year-old Punjabi Sikh truck driver is recovering after being stabbed 17 times at a rest area in Wyoming, United States. The victim, who has not been publicly named beyond 'Singh' in some reports, suffered severe injuries to his neck, chest, arms, and ribs, requiring hospitalization.
The brutal attack occurred just days after a controversial social media post by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The now-deleted post featured an AI-generated image of a Sikh-looking man identified as “Mr. Singh” and included inflammatory text urging him to “get off our roads” and to “self-deport or find out.” This incident has intensified concerns about growing hostility towards Sikh and South Asian Americans.
Details of the Attack and Arrest
According to reports, the driver was beaten before his attacker pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed him. Despite his severe wounds, he managed to escape the restroom where the assault took place but collapsed outside, bleeding heavily. A Hispanic family at the rest stop heard his cries for help, came to his aid, and ensured he received urgent medical attention. “They gave me second life,” the driver stated, expressing profound gratitude to the family.
Authorities have since arrested 45-year-old Andrew Kris Bzdak in connection with the stabbing. He has been charged with attempted first-degree murder. The Wyoming Highway Patrol located Bzdak's vehicle near Rawlins, approximately 113 km from the crime scene, and took him into custody. While an arrest has been made, charging documents cited by NPR do not establish a clear motive for the attack, and officials have not yet indicated if the victim was targeted due to his race, religion, or immigration status.
Community Concerns and Condemnation
The incident has deeply shaken the Sikh community and sparked widespread alarm. The victim, who has worked as a commercial truck driver for about three years, expressed concerns for the safety of other Punjabi Sikh drivers traveling across the US. “I don't know why this happened. I don't know why they attack me,” he reportedly told NPR from his hospital bed.
Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi publicly condemned the brutal assault, highlighting what he described as increasing animosity towards Sikh and South Asian Americans. In a post on X, Krishnamoorthi connected the stabbing to the recent controversial DHS post, which he characterized as a “racist caricature of a Sikh truck driver.” He also extended wishes for the victim's recovery and thanked the family who provided crucial assistance.
The DHS post, which was removed following widespread outrage from Sikh and Indian-American advocacy groups, featured the AI-generated image with text that read: “Mr. Singh: Get off our roads. Self-deport or find out.” The timing of the stabbing, so soon after this inflammatory social media content, has fueled fears that such rhetoric contributes to a climate of prejudice and violence against minority communities.
