Veteran Congress leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has declared his intention not to contest the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections. The 79-year-old politician cited his advancing age, health considerations, and a profound disillusionment with the current state of politics, which he described as "deeply polluted," as the primary reasons for his decision.
Speaking on his retirement from electoral contests, Siddaramaiah emphasized that while his time as an election candidate is concluding, he intends to remain actively engaged in public life. He affirmed his commitment to advocating for the welfare and issues of the people, stressing that his decision should not be mistaken for a complete withdrawal from public service.
Concerns Over Political Corruption
In a public statement, Siddaramaiah voiced strong concerns about the pervasive influence of money in contemporary elections. He lamented that the environment for honest politics has diminished significantly compared to earlier times when community support, rather than financial backing, was paramount for electoral success.
"Politics today has become highly corrupt. Honest politics seems to have little room to survive. In this context, I have decided not to contest any future elections," Siddaramaiah stated, reflecting on the shift from grassroots support to money-driven campaigns.
