Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has strongly criticized the opposition, accusing them of attempting to manipulate India's youth for political gain amidst ongoing protests in Delhi. His remarks come as the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak controversy continues to disrupt parliamentary proceedings, with the opposition demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Opposition Accused of Using Youth as 'Political Tools'
Speaking on Wednesday, Singh expressed "serious concern" over the demonstrations involving students and young people in the national capital. He alleged that some political entities were trying to use the country's youth as "political tools" to advance their own interests, rather than genuinely addressing their concerns.
"It is extremely unfortunate that some people are attempting to use the students and youth of our country as a political tool to fulfil their political interests," Singh stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Government Committed to Student Welfare Amid NEET Row
The Defence Minister emphasized the Narendra Modi-led government's dedication to the welfare and aspirations of students and young people. He affirmed the government's responsibility to listen to and resolve every concern raised by students.
The controversy surrounding the alleged NEET paper leak has led to significant disruptions in the Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon Session. Opposition parties have consistently stalled proceedings, insisting on Minister Pradhan's resignation as a precondition for any debate on the examination irregularities.
Parliamentary Debate vs. Street Protests
Singh further accused opposition leaders of fostering a "manufactured sense of anger" among the youth to influence public opinion. He reiterated the government's willingness to engage in "meaningful debates" on all issues within Parliament.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju echoed Singh's sentiments, stating that the government was fully prepared to discuss the NEET issue. However, Rijiju criticized the opposition for imposing conditions, which he suggested were designed to avoid a constructive debate. He highlighted that the government had expressed its readiness to discuss the matter since the session began, communicating this to Congress and other opposition parties.
Despite the government's stance, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge maintained that no debate would occur until Minister Pradhan stepped down, leading to repeated adjournments of the House.
Confidence in Informed Youth
Rajnath Singh concluded by expressing his unwavering confidence in the nation's youth, asserting that they are "aware, mature, and sensible." He believes they will recognize and reject such "deceptive attempts" by the opposition, choosing instead "the path of progress, development, and nation-building."
